Rocky Run News and Updates: May 24, 2019

A note from Dr. Goodloe:

Dear Rocky Run Families

As we approach Memorial Day, I am reminded of the great sacrifices of our military and their families.  We are very grateful for their service and look forward to honoring many members of our military community through our annual EyeWitness to History Day on Friday, May 31.

It has been a week of celebrations at RRMS including:

  • Our annual 8th grade dance was a HUGE success with almost 400 attendees last Friday evening.  I am always so proud of our students' behavior and the way in which they Raise the Ram at school events.
  • We were treated to two outstanding concerts by our choral groups and bands.  Thank you to Mrs. Christman, Mr. Raecke and Mr. Hill.  We look forward to orchestra on May 29.
  • National Junior Honor Society induction for 7th graders and Pinning Ceremony for 8th graders.
  • Students and teachers have performed well during a week of schedule changes to accommodate Math SOLs.  Our testing is almost complete!
    Way to go!!!

Wishing our families, staff and students a fun, safe and relaxing long weekend.

I welcome your feedback, questions and suggestions. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time.  I hope to see you at Rocky Run very soon.

Sincerely,

Amy T. Goodloe, Ed.D

Student Services Updates

HS Credit Course Expunge Process

High school credit courses taken in grades 7 and 8 become part of the student’s high school transcript and are included in the calculation of the high school Grade Point Average (GPA) and weighted as such. Virginia state and FCPS regulations permit parents/guardians of a middle school student who has completed a high school credit course to have that course expunged from the student’s record.

The request to remove a course from the transcript must be made in writing to the middle or high school that the student will attend the following year and prior to the end of the first nine weeks of the school year.

See Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School, Form. If you have questions or concerns regarding this, please contact your child’s school counselor no later than June 13.

Thinking of taking online math this summer?

Rising 9th grade students who are considering taking online Geometry Honors this summer, please be advised, some high schools have closed their face-to-face Algebra 2 Honors courses. Prior to enrolling in summer school math courses, please consult your child’s high school about how this summer program will affect their courses next year and beyond.

Courses selections for next year.

At this time, parents are able to see their student’s course selections in Parent Vue. Please review your child's schedule and contact your school counselor for any questions. Please note that June 13 is the deadline to change course requests for next year. Staffing is based on students' course requests and therefore, their course selection requires a firm commitment. Students can be placed in intervention courses based on their academic needs. Please contact your child's subject teachers and counselor for questions regarding intervention courses.

Math placements for rising 7th graders interested in taking Algebra in 7th grade will be finalized in June, after all SOL scores are complete.  Students who meet the qualifications (91% IOWA math score, and 500 or higher on the Math 7 SOL) will be placed in Algebra 1 Honors and parents will be notified by mail with an opportunity to opt out if they choose.

Student Intention Forms Moving this summer?  If your family plans include relocation, please notify us by completing the Intention Form and send it to Ms. Coreas-Chavez cacoreaschav@fcps.edu at your earliest convenience.

Rising 7th Grade Parents

Save the dates!

  • Rams Rally, August 22, 2:30-5:30 PM Students and parents are able to view their schedules and visit classrooms (teachers will not be available at that time). More information will follow later this summer.
  • 7th Grade Student Orientation, August 23, 8:00-11:00 AM (Students Only) Students will be able to take a bus from a local elementary school to come to Orientation. They will follow their schedules, meet teachers and have an opportunity to practice opening their lockers. Because there is no Shifting Gears this summer due to renovation, our orientation will address the many questions and concerns 7th graders have as they start middle school.

Library Books Due May 31

Please ask your child if they have any books still checked out from the library. This year, all library books are due by Friday, May 31. Please note that students will not receive their yearbook in June if they still have books due to the library. Contact Ms. Grover or Ms. Bickford with any questions. (you can link our email addresses to our names, if you’d like)

Under Construction: Renovation News.

  • Transformation of the old library into the new Lecture Hall is nearing the final stages.  We are hopeful to have it open before the end of the school year.
  • We are busily planning for the summer moves including the main office.  The office will be moving to the new addition the week of June 17 and will have limited summer hours, 9-1.
  • Video  about the renovation progress.
  • Visitor parking is designated closest to doors 2-4.  Faculty Permitted Parking only closest to door 1.  Thank you!

Air Quality:  During construction, questions about indoor air quality arise. The most recent air quality tests for May met all standards.   The air quality inside the building is monitored at least once per month.  Please visit the Rocky Run website to review FAQs related to indoor air quality.

If you have specific questions about the renovation, please email them to Administrative Assistant, AJ Ries, ajries@fcps.edu or call the Rocky Run MS main office at 703-802-7700.

We will post updates, pictures, timelines, etc on this page on our website. This page will also be linked as a static announcement on our homepage as we move through the renovation process.
