Students Perform at our Academy Awards!

Dear Family Fairfax,

A little power outage on the Friday before a three-day weekend AND the last school day for our seniors, you say?  There is never a dull moment at Fairfax High School!

As we look ahead to a beautiful, three-day weekend, I think this week represented the “spectrum” of excellence that is truly a gift to our community:

  • On Tuesday, we celebrated the Academy Awards in style.  Though our Academy is available to all high schools in FCPS, it was fun to see so many of our students recognized!
  • Wednesday welcomed our rising freshmen class, where some of our upcoming graduates talked about the importance of getting involved, staying focused on academics, and having fun—you only get to do high school once.  Fun isn’t certainly what high school is all about, but some of my fondest memories were laughing on a football field, working on skits for English class with my friends, and line dancing with our class sponsor at prom.  (We line danced in Tennessee!)
  • On Thursday, we weathered the storm to a Choral Showcase and tonight, our baseball team will take on Lake Braddock.  I was  so proud to learn of all the medals at the Regional Track and Field meet as well!

So, this week had music, learning, fellowship, competition, and celebration rolled into it.  Not too shabby when we are counting the days to summer vacation!

Next Friday, we will continue the tradition of the Senior Walk.  Seniors will dress up in their caps and gowns and head over to Lanier, Providence, and Daniels Run to celebrate their graduation with the community who supported them.  (We are working on Eagle View and Willow Springs.)  I can remember well seeing our seniors march into Lanier last year,  the tears and beaming smiles were second only to the cheering students and staff.  I reminded seniors that those walks pay tribute to their hard work and the hard work of so many who supported and loved them:  It also inspires younger students who might not clearly see the finish line…yet.

Here is to a beautiful and relaxing three day weekend!
