Wishing Mrs. Glines and Ms. Lovett all the best!

Dear Families,

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! As we enjoy the long holiday weekend, we take a moment to remember those who bravely gave their lives for our country. Thank you to all who serve and to all who have sacrificed on the behalf of our country.

Today, we honor and bid farewell to two of our second-grade teachers, Mrs. Katelyn Glines and Ms. Ellie Lovett.

Mrs. Glines has been a Floris teacher for the past 7 years. She began as a fourth-grade advanced academics teacher and moved to second-grade four years ago. Mrs. Glines loves how her students are always interested in trying new things. She will miss the parent community here at Floris which she found so supportive and welcoming. We wish her all the best as she takes a third-grade position in a school closer to home so that she will be able to spend more time with her 6th month old son.

Ms. Lovett began her teaching career here at Floris as a student teacher in second and fourth grades. She was hired 8 years ago to join our third-grade team and for the past 2 years she has enjoyed her role as a second-grade teacher. Ms. Lovett has loved seeing her students continue to grow and thrive throughout the years. Ms. Lovett recently moved to the DC area and is looking forward to a shorter commute. She will be teaching fourth grade at a school in the Alexandria area. We wish her all the best.

ATTENTION Floris volunteers! We will be honoring you and showing our thanks with snacks the week of June 3rd. When you come into the school to volunteer please look for the table with water and treats. We are so grateful for all you have done for us. Our school and community continues to thrive because of all of your time and dedication to our school.

The end of year is fast approaching. The last day for this school year is Thursday, June 13, 2019. Students will be dismissed three hours early at 1:00 PM. As has been standard policy, we will not be able to accept bus notes on this day. Please make the necessary arrangements for this early dismissal. Immediately following dismissal, all Floris staff will be in a mandatory meeting.

We wish you all a wonderful long weekend!

Sincerely,

Gail Porter, Principal and Amanda Dorr, Assistant Principal

Class Placement for 2019-2020

If you have information to share regarding your child’s placement, please email Mrs. Porter at Parent_input@fcps.edu by May 31st, 2019.  (Note, there is an underscore after ‘Parent’ and before ‘input’). Please remember that we do not take requests for specific teachers as we base our decisions on individual student strengths and instructional needs. As a note for you to be aware, grade level assignments for staff are sometimes modified due to late enrollments, unforeseen changes, and other considerations.  Staff assignments are determined at the end of the summer.  Staff members have been directed not to give out information about student placement in order to eliminate last minute surprises when changes must be made due to staffing issues.

Rising 6th Grader? Immunization Requirement!

Will your child be a sixth grader next year?  If so, they need a booster dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis). Sixth grade students cannot begin school in August without the school having documentation that they have had the Tdap booster. Parents or guardians of current fifth graders, please check your child’s immunization records and make arrangements with your doctor for the immunization. Documentation confirming receipt of the vaccination must be turned into the office before your child can start school on August 26th, 2019.

Floris Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) 2018-2019 Testing Schedule Students in grades 3-6 will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests beginning May 13th through June 1st. It will be very helpful if you can avoid appointments which may take your child out of school during this time period. To help your child to perform at his or her best, ensure he or she has had a good night’s rest, a healthy breakfast and comes to school with a positive attitude.
