Same-Day Early Release Requests

All same-day early release check-outs must be accompanied with a note turned in at the beginning of the school day.  In addition, if you know that your child will be out for an entire day, you can send in a note before their absence to ensure that it is recorded before the actual absence.

Thank you for working with us during this busy time of year!

Course Requests for 2019-2020

All students have had an opportunity to complete academic advising for the 2019-2020 school year. Staffing for next year’s courses is dependent on student course selections.

To ensure that we have accurate course registration numbers, please review your child’s requested schedule in SIS ParentVue or StudentVue (click “Course Request” on the menu on the left hand side).

Contact your child’s school counselor by email with any schedule change requests.  Please do this as soon as possible.  If no changes are needed, you do not need to contact the counselor.  If your child applied for an academy class, he/she will be notified of the academy’s decision in the beginning of April.  If accepted, course changes, including adding the academy class to your child’s course request list, will be made at that time.  Friday, May 31st will be the last day to make course selection changes for the 2019-2020 school year.

Medication Pick-up

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than dismissal time on Thursday, June 13th. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded.

It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian, however, with parent or guardian written permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the health room. If you have any questions, please contact the School Health Aide Christina Lugo at 703-503-4610 of the Public Health Nurse Kate Boyd at 703-503-4691.

Where Are You Going to School Next Year?

If you will not be attending Woodson or a Fairfax County high school this fall, please let Woodson Student Services know now.

Please click here and fill out this form.  Student Services will make sure all transcripts are forwarded to your child’s new school so his/her file is complete.  If you have any questions, please contact Woodson registrar Christine Lieb-Mosley at 703-503-4622 or cliebmosley@fcps.edu.

New Student Summer Tours

All new transfer students (grades 9-12) and rising 9th grade students from Frost are invited to take tours of Woodson High School this summer. Student-led Tours will be taking place from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm on July 29th, July 31st, and August 6th.

To schedule a tour, please contact Woodson’s registrar Mrs. Lieb-Mosley at 703-503-4622 or via email at CLiebMosley@fcps.edu.

Ahoy, Parents of the Classes of 2019, 2020 and 2021!

Woodson’s All-Night Grad Party, aka Cav Cruise, needs YOUR help!

Cav Cruise is a community event that keeps our graduates off the street on a historically dangerous night. Since Fairfax County starting doing all-night grad parties, there have been no fatalities on graduation night. Woodson’s Cav Cruise is held at Oak Marr Rec Center on graduation night and is typically attended by 70-80% of the graduating class. This year’s celebration will be held on Tuesday, June 4th.

We need about 300 volunteers to make this event a success.

Sign up here to volunteer: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0a4aafaf2ca20-woodson2

Thank you in advance for all your help! We look forward to working with you on this extraordinary celebration!

If you have any questions, please reach out to us at cavcruisedirector@woodsonptso.org.

FCPSOn Volunteer Opportunity

We are excited to be participating in the FCPSOn initiative. In order to ensure that every student is ready for the first day of school we will have five distribution dates at various times in August. It is our hope that everyone will be able to pick up their computers prior to the start of school.

In order for us to reach this goal we need help from the community. Please consider signing up for shifts to help with distribution. Students can earn service learning credit for helping. To sign up please visit https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b45afaf2aa20-fcpson. If you have any questions about volunteering or distribution, please contact Stephanie Pollack (sepollack@fcps.edu).

Career Center Volunteers

Many or our W.T. Woodson Career Center (CC) Parent Volunteers are graduating this year.  CC volunteers have a unique opportunity to learn about the post-secondary research and application process during their volunteer shifts.  Parents of rising 9th and 10th grade students especially benefit because they will feel more comfortable when it is time for their students to embark on post-secondary research.  To provide consistency, volunteers are asked to commit to a shift for an entire academic year.  Interested parents can sign up at https://tinyurl.com/Vol4WTW.  Register by or before Thursday, June 6th for best consideration.

Canterbury Woods Coding Event

Coding Workshop Big Success!

Two Woodson students committed to teaching others how to code sponsored a coding workshop at Canterbury Woods Elementary School.  Thirty-one eager fourth and fifth grade students attended the event.

Victoria and Sara helped the students build game-like scenes using Code.org.  The students created “Dance Party” scenes complete with backgrounds, music, dance moves and lots of humor.  Behind the fun, serious learning took place.  The students learned how to manipulate their Sprites, complete logic challenges, and designed their scenes to meet specifications created by the student leaders.  There were giggles, fist bumps, smiles and celebrations as the students created.  Meanwhile, Sara and Victoria learned a bit about moving thirty-one elementary school students forward in their coding experience. I am sure you can imagine what it was like to  manage thirty one active, excited children, after school, during SOL testing, on May 22nd! Sara and Victoria seemed liked veteran teachers as they taught the class.  Everyone learned a bit of code, had a lot of fun, and enjoyed the afternoon.  Congratulations Victoria and Sara for a job well done!

Matt Rupar (9th grade), along with his father and grandfather. This was an amazing opportunity for students to experience living history!
