May 24, 2019 - Family Newsletter

The majority of our SOL testing is complete and now comes the real work. We have students that scored in the retake range so teachers are busy providing focused instruction to those students so they have another change to be successful on the assessment. Testing will be totally finished on Friday, May 31. Thank you again for ensuring your children were in school on testing days as we had the least amount of make-ups in my 8 years at Union Mill.

Another thank you goes out to all of you that donated food to our last Feed the Need Power Pack assembly and those that volunteered their time with our students. Our 6th graders were able to make approximately 450 packs that will go to students in need this summer. Thank you! Click on the picture below to see more from the assembly. #OtherPeopleMatter

Please contact Dorothy Van Gorder at dfvangorder@fcps.edu. #OtherPeopleMatter

Family Fitness will be ending their year-long Monday meetings on June 3, with another very special event. Staff members and parents will be playing a basketball game at Liberty Middle School from 4-5 pm on Monday, June 3. All families are welcome to join us for this free event. Students must be accompanied by an adult.  If you are a parent interested in playing in the game you can contact Jenny Murray at jbmurray@fcps.edu or just show up that day.  Please contact Jenny Murray if you have any questions.

To see some of the fun you are missing out on by not being involved in Family Fitness, click on the picture below. It is not to late to join in the fun; consider signing up for the 5K and/or join us at the "pick up" basketball game on Monday, June 3 at Liberty MS at 4:00.

As we head towards Memorial Day, it was time for our kindergarten students to Celebrate America with songs and words. It was wonderful to see how much our kinders have grown this year by the confidence and enthusiasm they showed in their performance. Click on the picture below to see more from Ms. Campbell and Ms. Argabright's classes.

Next week brings our 2nd grade performance of It's a Jungle Out There. Join us Wednesday evening at 7:00 for the family performance of this time honored tradition. Also coming up are our long-anticipated Field Days. Please see information later in this newsletter for times for specific grade levels and a link to sign up to volunteer. We cannot have a successful Field Day without your help.

Sixth grade parents should mark Wednesday, June 12, on the calendar as that is the day for our 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony. The ceremony begins at 9:00 AM and plan to arrive early to check in and be sure to bring your license to sign in to our system in the office.

As we continue to think about next year, there will be a change with birthday treats. Due to the extensive amount of severe allergies and our focus on healthy lifestyles, we will no longer allow students to bring in food birthday treats. Think about donating a favorite book to the classroom library that your child would want to share with their classmates. Students could also bring in a non-food item to share such as a pencil or eraser. This new policy will be in place when we begin school in August.

Please help us plan for next year by reaching out to families in our boundaries with children that have not registered yet. Ask them to contact the school office to start the registration process as soon as possible. The county's projections seemed low, so we need your help to ensure we are staffed appropriately for the needs of your children.

2019-20 Kindergarten Registration Underway - Please register to ensure we are staffed appropriately for next year!

We are currently registering new students for kindergarten for the 2019-20 school year. If your child will reach his or her fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2019, he or she is eligible to attend kindergarten in the Fairfax County Public School that serves your address. Please share this information with anyone you know that will have a child that will be in kindergarten next year. Here are the steps for registration:

  1. Complete a packet of registration forms—you may obtain these in the Union Mill Elementary office or online at https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/enroll_0.pdf. Feel free to call Union Mill’s registrar at 703‑322‑8500 if you need help navigating the website.
  2. Gather supporting documents—proof of residence in the Union Mill boundary, your child's original birth certificate, parent/guardian photo ID, and any custody orders. Certificate of physical exam and immunization will be required before your child may start school, but is not required for registration.
  3. Call the registrar at 703-322-8500 or email lrmilla@fcps.edu to make an appointment to bring your completed registration forms and supporting documentation to school.

If you do not plan to enroll your age eligible child for the 2019-20 school year, you must notify the office in writing.
