Dear CES,

Wow, it is hard to believe that we only have 4 weeks left in the 2018/2019 school year. We are currently in the middle of SOLs and our students are showing tremendous resilience and effort.

Hopefully, we will have our Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade Field Days on Monday. Field Day for grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 will be on Thursday, May 30th. I am optimistic that the weather will cooperate for this fun event.

Mark your calendar, on Thursday, June 6th we will hold our annual Student Success event. This year we will hold the event (Success Night) in the evening from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm rather than during the school day. Please plan to join us to celebrate all of the wonderful success our students have made this school year!

2019-2020 Class Placement Survey

We greatly value parent feedback and we recognize that class placements are an essential component of a successful learning environment.

In June of this year we will be working on our class placements for the 2019-2020 school year and will be collecting parent input electronically using this form. Please know that selecting class placements at CES is a complex process which requires the collaboration of administrators, teachers, and input from our parents. For this reason, please know that all information submitted on this form will be shared with the administrators, classroom teachers, and specialists.

Click HERE for the Class Placement Survey.

All feedback must be submitted by June 1.

Thank you for taking the time to fill out this form, and we will reference this information to help us make an informed class placement decision.

FF4αC

Mr. Douds and Mrs. Van Gorder will be initiating a new family program focused on fitness, service learning, and character education. The overall theme for Family Fitness 4 α Cause will be family fun character education, with a focus on helping others (#OtherPeopleMatter).  A key component is family participation and all children must have a parent or guardian present to participate.  Please click HERE to let us know if you will join us on Thursday, May 23 at 4:30 PM in the CES Gym to learn more about this family fitness program. We will be having a cookout following the meeting.

This past week our students focused on:

OTHER PEOPLE MATTER MINDSET

#OtherPeopleMatter is our motto, hashtag, and the spirit of the movement we are building. It originated with Dr. Chris Peterson, one of the founders of positive psychology and Mike Erwin’s mentor and advisor in graduate school. Other People Matter was Chris’ thesis resulting from his decades of research.

As Chris wrote in 2008, he would often begin lectures by stating, “I can sum up positive psychology in just three words – Other People Matter. Period. Anything that builds relationships between and among people is going to make you happy.” Chris passed away suddenly in October 2012 and we are proud to carry on his legacy through the research on character and relationships that he led.

This week's example is Principal Adam Erbrecht of Liberty Middle School (in Fairfax County Public Schools, VA). In December 2018, he became a living kidney donor. Our content manager Janene Ritchie conducted an interview with Adam to learn more about his motivation and experience donating a kidney. For the full interview, please click here. Below are an excerpt of the interview and video of Adam working at Liberty Middle School.
