Lending Library

Troop 3604 recently earned their Bronze Award by planning, raising money, and installing a new Lending Library for Willow Springs Elementary.

Dear Willow Springs,

Have you seen the awesome Little Free Library in front of Willow Springs? We would love for you to share books you love for others to enjoy. Whenever you use our Little Free Library, think of the motto for Little Free Libraries all over the world, take one and return one. Please feel free to take a book, but don’t forget to drop one off so someone else can have a great book to read. Thank you Troop 3604 for your hard work and thoughtfulness - we love it!

E-A-R-S!! What does that spell? EARS!... Our students are continuing to show Empathy, Accountability, Respect, and Safety as our 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders work through SOL testing and the remainder of the school year. Our Fox Family celebrated our successes at our WSES Pep Rally last Thursday, where we showcase students’ talents from all grade levels. We love the many opportunities where our students and staff have the chance to encourage and support one another.

Our 4th, 5th, and 6th grade Strings students performed in the Franklin Middle School gym last week where it was standing room only. Thank you to our students and to Ms. Aban and Ms. Venne for all of their hard work and dedication throughout the entire school year. This end of the year performance included musical pieces where our students played their instruments using paper, and the final piece even included the participation of the entire audience. The concert was a sight to see!

We hope you enjoy the long Memorial Day weekend. We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, May 28th.

All the best,

Dylan Taylor, Principal

Rashida Green, Assistant Principal

Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

Annual Sixth Grade Food Drive

food drive

As part of our end of the year celebration, the sixth graders are asking students to donate food items to support Western Fairfax Christian Ministries.  http://www.wfcmva.org/food-pantry

The food drive will be held Tuesday, May 28 – Thursday, June 13, 2019

The pantry has a need for nonperishable “Kid Foods” such as macaroni & cheese, pop top Ravioli, Ramen noodles, cereal, canned meat, fruit cups, snacks, treats, juice, non-refrigerated milk, etc.

All food items donated will be deeply appreciated. The purpose of this project is to instill in our students the idea that as good citizens we help our community.

There will be a short presentation on why they selected Head Start, followed by a viewing of the movie The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free but donations are encouraged. Pizza will be available for pre-purchase and concessions will be sold on-site. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to support Head Start.

Officer Nunley with Sixth Grade Students

Thank you to Officer Nunley, Lanier’s SRO, for visiting our 6th graders, answering their questions, and easing their minds about next year's transition. Working collaboratively to prepare our students for next year is one of our goals.

Strings Spring Concert

Strings Concert

Our 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade Strings students performed in the Franklin Middle School gym last week where it was standing room only. Thank you to our students and to Ms. Aban and Ms. Venne for all of their hard work and dedication throughout the entire school year.

Bus Driver Appreciation

Thank you so much to everyone that contributed to making our annual Bus Driver Appreciation breakfast such a huge success. Our bus drivers enjoyed the yummy food while having an opportunity to sit down, relax and converse with each other. A huge round of applause to our coordinator, Robert Walter. His organization skills, goody bags and books for our drivers were greatly appreciated.

WSES SOL Testing Schedule & Score Reports

SOLs are in full swing. We are in the midst of completing the scheduled assessments and will be moving to make ups and retakes. Please note, all SOL scores will be sent to families along with the final progress report. If your student qualifies for a retake, you will be contacted individually with that information. We will not provide individual scores at this time. Students have worked very hard during testing, and we are so very proud of them!

Kindergarten Registration Now Open for 2019-20 School Year!

If you have a child who will reach the age of five on or before September 30, 2019, they are eligible to attend kindergarten for the 2019-20 school year. If your child meets the age requirement and lives within the boundaries of Willow Springs Elementary School they may be registered at this time. Please sign up for a registration appointment. Forms and documents required for registration can be found through this link (scroll down to Student Registration) to the Willow Springs website. Student registrations have a direct impact on teacher staffing so the sooner registrations take place the better able we are to staff accordingly. Please call 703-679-6071 or email Liz Flaherty with any questions.

TDAP Reminder for Rising 6th Graders

All students entering 6th grade MUST have documentation showing that they have received their Tdap vaccination prior to the start of the school year. (For students who do not turn age 11 until September, an exception can be made IF parents present documentation that a doctor's appointment is scheduled for the child to receive his/her Tdap in September.) Contact Liz Flaherty, Registrar, eaflaherty@fcps.edu, with questions.

Attention Parents: Cafeteria Volunteers Needed

Please consider volunteering to help out in our cafeteria. We are short a cafeteria hostess so the extra hands would be helpful. No training required, the hostess will give you a bucket with condiments, etc. to pass out as kids raise their hands for help.

Hope to see you in the cafeteria! The kids love seeing new faces!

We're Celebrating Miss Violette!

FCPS Cares Award to Miss Baste

"Violette is a one-woman-show. She comes to the cafeteria every day ready to do it all. She is helping the students, cleaning up, and anything else needed to give them a great experience at lunch time. Violette is energetic and always pleasant and kind. Greatest cafeteria hostess eh-ver!"
