 Principal's Note
Parents,
Thanks to all the families and Long & Foster that came last Saturday to work in our Outdoor Classroom. We were able to fill the ten raised garden beds with a mixture of soil and compost. Next, we tackled our pollinator garden, removing the top layer of soil and replacing it with compost. The 14’ x 25’ area will be planted with native Virginia plants that attract butterflies and bees. Last year’s third grade class did a Project Based Learning (PBL) activity researching the types of plants that we can use in this area. We will wrap up the school year planting vegetables (carrots, squash and cucumbers) for a fall harvest.
Out Teach https://www.out-teach.org/ which is a non-profit organization is excited that Sleepy Hollow is in their Greenhouse (on the waiting list) for an outdoor classroom build, followed by two years of Professional Development. They are actively recruiting corporate funders and hope to have Sleepy Hollow matched with a funder in time for a Spring 2020 build.
The brick sale has been successful, and we have reached the midpoint of our goal. We have currently sold forty five bricks. If we order now we would lose $600 in profit. Our goal of selling one hundred bricks would put us in a better financial position to actually construct something using the bricks. We are planning to have a table at Open House in August and then follow up with another flyer the second week of school in the fall to parents and families. Also, we are advertising on the Lake Barcroft server to see if we can get additional orders from former Sleepy Hollow students.
This year we have used our Lowes grant to purchase lumber for our garden beds and supplies. Our neighbor school, Congressional has purchased tools for each grade level to use for gardening. We are thankful for the amount of support in the community to make this a reality and looking forward to full operation in the near future.
Thank you, Eric T. Johnson Principal

FIRST® LEGO® League Information
Every year, First Lego League releases a Challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic. Each challenge has three parts: the Robot Game, the Project, and the Core Values. Teams of up to ten children, with at least two adult coaches, participate in the Challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score point on a themed playing field (Robot Game), developing a solution to a problem they have identified (Project), all guided by the First Core Values. Our teams will then attend an official tournament, hosted by First Lego League Partners.
More information about First Lego League can be found by visiting the First Lego League website: www.firstlegoleague.org/challenge.
