Ahoy, Parents of the Classes of 2019, 2020 and 2021!

Woodson’s All-Night Grad Party, aka Cav Cruise, needs YOUR help!

Cav Cruise is a community event that keeps our graduates off the street on a historically dangerous night. Since Fairfax County starting doing all-night grad parties, there have been no fatalities on graduation night. Woodson’s Cav Cruise is held at Oak Marr Rec Center on graduation night and is typically attended by 70-80% of the graduating class. This year’s celebration will be held on Tuesday, June 4th.

We need about 300 volunteers to make this event a success. As of today, we still need 126 more volunteers to keep the party going!

SENIOR PARENTS:

Join us for the party after you celebrate with your Senior and family! We especially need your help with a variety of activities in the latter half of the evening. Revisit your youth and pull an all-nighter with us! We guarantee you lots of fun and caffeine!

UNDERCLASS PARENTS:

Pay it forward! We need your help with daytime slots, in particular with unloading Cav Cruise items at Oak Marr and putting up decorations. Give Senior parents the gift of time to spend with their graduate while you set up for the party. Your kindness will be greatly appreciated by all the proud Senior parents….and repaid when it’s your turn!

Sign up here to volunteer: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0a4aafaf2ca20-woodson2

Thank you in advance for all your help! We look forward to working with you on this extraordinary celebration!

If you have any questions, please reach out to us at cavcruisedirector@woodsonptso.org.

May Is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Many students struggle with emotional and behavioral issues that can affect their learning and overall wellness. If you have any concerns about anxiety, peer relationship problems, depression, or other social and emotional issues your child may be experiencing, please contact your school psychologist, school social worker, or school counselor. They are available for consultation and support.

Visit the Mental Health and Resiliency and Student Wellness: Tips and Strategies web pages to learn about mental health resources and fostering resiliency in your child.

CrisisText Is Available for Students 24/7

Parents: Any student who is feeling extremely overwhelmed or is in crisis can connect with CrisisText. Students just need to text “NEEDHELP” to 85511 or call 1-800-273-TALK. Please feel free to share this information as appropriate.

Career Center Volunteers

Many or our W.T. Woodson Career Center (CC) Parent Volunteers are graduating this year.  CC volunteers have a unique opportunity to learn about the post-secondary research and application process during their volunteer shifts.  Parents of rising 9th and 10th grade students especially benefit because they will feel more comfortable when it is time for their students to embark on post-secondary research.  To provide consistency, volunteers are asked to commit to a shift for an entire academic year.  Interested parents can sign up at https://tinyurl.com/Vol4WTW.  Register by or before Thursday, June 6th for best consideration.

Sports Physicals for 2019-2020

With Spring upon us, it is time to start gearing up for our annual sports physical nights, and it is critical that we have an adequate number of volunteers to make it happen.

As of now, we are in dire need of physicians and HCPs to complete the actual physical exams (MD, DO, NP, PA) as well as the functional musculoskeletal evaluation (DPT, PTA, PTS, ATC, etc). If you are willing and able to donate your time, it is greatly appreciated. If not, and you know of some others that would be able to assist us, please feel free to spread the word! Below is the event’s general information that includes the link used for volunteers to register!

If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at chogge@fcps.edu .

The W.T. Woodson Athletic Training Program’s annual Sports Physical Night event will be held this year on June 10th at W.T. Woodson High School. Appointment times available are at 5:30, 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, and 7:30pm.

If you are willing to help out, we will start with dinner and station setup at 4:30 p.m.  We will want everyone at their stations by 5:15 p.m.  If everything runs accordingly we should be done by 8. Hosting this event is our Athletic Training Program’s only fundraiser for the year and how we purchase supplies. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. We are extremely grateful for and appreciate your commitment in helping with this event if at all possible. As always, the goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete and thorough pre-participation examination screening that will provide student athletes with a valid VHSL physical for the entirety of the 2019-20 academic year. Each year it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports.

Volunteers and student athletes may register for sports physical night, and find out more information here: https://www.fcps.edu/athletic.preparticipation.screenings.

Course Requests for 2019-2020

All students have had an opportunity to complete academic advising for the 2019-2020 school year. Staffing for next year’s courses is dependent on student course selections.

To ensure that we have accurate course registration numbers, please review your child’s requested schedule in SIS ParentVue or StudentVue (click “Course Request” on the menu on the left hand side).

Contact your child’s school counselor by email with any schedule change requests.  Please do this as soon as possible.  If no changes are needed, you do not need to contact the counselor.  If your child applied for an academy class, he/she will be notified of the academy’s decision in the beginning of April.  If accepted, course changes, including adding the academy class to your child’s course request list, will be made at that time.  Friday, May 31st will be the last day to make course selection changes for the 2019-2020 school year.
