Our seniors should be getting their announcements/invitations this week for graduation.  Parents of seniors, please remember that we have a celebration in the café after graduation.  Graduation is May 31st at 4:00 PM here at The Lane.  Thank you for all your support for as many years as we’ve had your student at Cedar Lane.

Senior Final Exams

The week of May 13-17 is scheduled for Senior Final Exams.  Teachers may give the final exam prior to that week and will announce to the class when the final will take place.

Underclass Final Exams

Final exams for underclass begin on June 7 and continue the week of June 10-12.

SOLS

There have been several changes to SOL Testing requirements outlined by the State of Virginia.  Students who are assigned an SOL test need that SOL to graduate.  Successful performance will reduce how many tests a student will need to take in the future, making attendance and participation instrumental in earning verified credits for your students intended diploma. Students should be encouraged to get a full night of sleep and breakfast.  Remind your student that no electronic devices are allowed in the testing environment.

If you have any questions regarding SOL Testing please contact our School Testing Coordinator, Marissa King @ meking@fcps.edu

PTSA News

On Wednesday, May 15th, as part of Staff Appreciation Week, the PTSA will be hosting a luncheon for staff. We are looking for parents to donate gift cards for the teachers!  We want to make sure that we show our staff just how much we appreciate all of their hard work and are hoping to get enough gift cards for all 60 staff members! If you would be able to donate- please call (703-208-2420) or email Jennifer Min at Jennifer.min@fcps.edu.  If you would like to attend the event to help serve food to staff we would love the help! Please also encourage your student to write a small note or tell staff that they are appreciated for all that they do! Thanks for your help!

1:1 FCPSOn is Coming Next Year

  • Students' lives have changed considerably in how they live, communicate, work, and interact within a globally connected world. Students need both content and skills outlined in the Portrait of a Graduate in order to be successful in the workforce of the future. FCPSOn can support the development of both content knowledge and Portrait of a Graduate skills.
  • FCPSOn increases equitable access to technology and to instructional practices that lead to personalized, meaningful learning experiences. This allows students opportunities for deeper understanding of content and the skills needed by the Portrait of a Graduate.
  • FCPSOn will support teachers as they create learner-centered environments that help students learn concepts in meaningful experiences. The technology not only facilitates learning, it also frees time to focus attention in places that makes teaching and learning more rewarding.

All FCPS High Schools will issue an FCPS owned devices to each student in their High School.  Cedar Lane is no different, we will issue an FCPS owned device to every student at Cedar Lane as well.  The laptop does belong to FCPS it is considered a “loaner” to each student and will be collected at the end of each school year.

Parents may opt out of the issuing of the loaner laptop.  We can also work with parents to determine if the laptop should stay at Cedar Lane and not go home with your student.

Cedar Lane Staff have been preparing for this initiative through Professional Development all this year.  We will continue all next year as well.  This initiative requires our staff and students to have a mindset change.  From our staff’s perspective it means their classroom will become a “Blended Learning” one if it is not already.   From our student’s perspective it means Digital Citizenship will heavily play on their learning experience.  It will require not just our staff to support this, but our parents to as well.

To read more about FCPSOn, check out our official web site.

https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/fcpson

We will share more information with as we prepare this year.  You will hear more about:

  • How the equipment is issued and how it will be returned.
  • How to get technical issues resolved with the laptop.
  • What safe guards are in place when students are using the internet?
  • What students can and cannot do on the laptops.
  • Whether there is a fee to use the laptop.
  • What are the expectations for using the laptop?

We are very excited to participate in this program.  We will undoubtably learn and then help other FCPS facilities who work with our kids.

Stay Tuned!!
