Science Fair

On April 30th, 2019, the Woodley Hills Junior Scientists in grades 4th through 6th celebrated their passion for scientific inquiry by sharing their personal Science Fair Projects. Students have worked diligently on these projects since January, and they shared their findings with judges in the afternoon; for many this was a new and nerve wracking experience. They all did exceptionally well, and we are incredibly proud of each of them!  In the evening students attended the STEAM expo which included, Recycling Relays sponsored by Ms. Tucker,  Engineering Stations sponsored by Mr.Teclay (and run by Mount Vernon High School's Science NHS students), and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? Sponsored by Mr. Gibson.

We are excited to share that several students were nominated to attend the 6th Annual Regional Science and Engineering Fair held at George Mason University on Saturday, May 11th, 2019.

Please join us in congratulating all of our school winners, and wishing good luck to those who will attend the regional event on Saturday!

SOL Scheduling Considerations for Ramadan

Students in grades 3-6 in our school will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests between May 8 and May 31. It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period. It is also important that your child has a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing.

This spring, the SOL non-writing window will have significant overlap with Ramadan, the Muslim holy month marked by daily fasting from sunrise to sunset. Only two days at the end of the expedited retake window fall completely outside this religious observance. At Woodley Hills, all SOL tests are scheduled to begin at 9am and typically students complete testing before midday, with the exception of 6th grade because their Reading and Math tests are administered and completed on one day. SOL tests for Reading and Mathematics in grades 3-5 are administered over two days. If individual parents or guardians would like to request that their children’s testing be rescheduled, please contact Theresa Johnson, Assistant Principal and School Test Coordinator (STC), to determine what options are available to address their students’ needs.

A Call for Nominations for 2019-2020 WHES PTA Positions

Your PTA needs you!

We need you to help us support our WHES students with fun and educational activities, and to participate directly in the organization that speaks for the students both within our school and before organizations deciding issues that affect them.

By becoming a PTA member, you’ll be demonstrating to your child the importance you place on education. Research shows that children do better when parents are involved including improved grades and test scores.

The PTA can be a way for you to more effectively suggest change at your child’s school. Involved parents understand the challenges schools face and become part of the solution. By developing a closer relationship with parents, student achievement improves, and the school develops a positive reputation in the community.

By getting involved at your child’s school you’ll be part of the solution, helping make positive changes. Local PTAs play an important role in fundraising to provide building improvements, curriculum-based programs, and social events.

The current board officers in these positions are leaving Woodley Hills at the end of this year. Without parents to fill these positions, there will be no support provided by the PTA. It is important that you consider nominating yourself or someone else for one of the positions described below.

OFFICERS

PRESIDENT: Oversees all of the activities of the PTA, to include holding monthly general meetings and 2-3 planning meetings of the Board. Works with the officers of the PTA to ensure compliance with the guidelines and statutes of the WHES PTA.

VICE – PRESIDENT: Assists the President and substitutes for the President in case of absence or inability to fulfill duties.

SECRETARY: Maintains an accurate record of the proceedings of the PTA and distributes minutes of meetings. Works with the Volunteer Coordinator to maintain and update the website and Facebook page with events, information and forms, to prepare and distribute monthly newsletter and PTA announcements and invitations. Maintains accurate information on membership.

TREASURER: Prepares the annual budget and monthly budget reports. Maintains accurate records of all money received and spent. Writes all checks in the name of the PTA and sends letters of acknowledgment to donors. Collects and organizes the annual audit of accounts.

If you are interested in nominating yourself or someone else for any of the above positions, please email Romaine Winiarski (rmwiniarski@verizon.net) or Theresa Mastrian (tmastrian@hotmail.com) by May 22nd. An electronic vote for officers will be held on June 5th. Only registered and paid PTA members are eligible to vote for Officers.
