A Message from WTW Administration

Hello Woodson Families!

This weekend is our Prom and marks less than one month until the class of 2019 graduates!

As I reflect on the last couple years at WTW, I see many exciting successes in the classroom, on the field and on the stage.  I want to thank the families and friends who have come out to see the musical this Spring as well as to various sporting events.  I’m excited that we have 4 Cappies nominations for the work on Thoroughly Modern Millie!

This is also Teacher Appreciation Week!   Thank you to our PTSO for a fantastic lunch; we appreciate all of the donations by parents.  If you did not have a chance to send a teacher a note, it is never too late.   We all appreciate notes of thanks and positive encouragement, especially during the end of the year.   Our staff work hard to foster a culture of success by developing the academic, social, and emotional potential of all students.

We work daily to ensure each student at Woodson feels included, seen, valued, and appreciated as an important member of our school community.

These Friday News You Choose messages are the main vehicle through which we send information to the community.  We would like to know your feedback, what you like, what you want to see more of or less of in the weekly emails.  Please provide your feedback here:     https://forms.gle/dPXNmVPfFCoiPpEp6

Thank you… 25 days until graduation,

Dr. Floyd and the WTW Administrative Team

Attendance Calls During AP, IB and Online SOL Testing

During AP, IB and SOL testing at high schools, morning attendance telephone calls, texts and e-mails to home will not occur through Thursday, June 13th.

This temporary suspension reflects the fact that students are often in designated testing sites within the school during the normal attendance-taking time. The evening attendance telephone calls and e-mails will still remain in place.

National Merit Scholarship

Thirty students from ten Fairfax County high schools have been named winners of $2,500 scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.  Scholarship winners are part of a group of approximately 2,500 National Merit finalists chosen to receive scholarships primarily financed by the NMSC.

Woodson's winner is Kelly Huang and her probable area of study is chemistry.

Each of the FCPS winners received a scholarship supported by the NMSC’s own funds. Winners are chosen by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, not the school district.

Sports Physicals for 2019-2020

With Spring upon us, it is time to start gearing up for our annual sports physical nights, and it is critical that we have an adequate number of volunteers to make it happen.

As of now, we are in dire need of physicians and HCPs to complete the actual physical exams (MD, DO, NP, PA) as well as the functional musculoskeletal evaluation (DPT, PTA, PTS, ATC, etc). If you are willing and able to donate your time, it is greatly appreciated. If not, and you know of some others that would be able to assist us, please feel free to spread the word! Below is the event’s general information that includes the link used for volunteers to register!

If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at chogge@fcps.edu .

The W.T. Woodson Athletic Training Program’s annual Sports Physical Night event will be held this year on June 10th at W.T. Woodson High School. Appointment times available are at 5:30, 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, and 7:30pm.

If you are willing to help out, we will start with dinner and station setup at 4:30 p.m.  We will want everyone at their stations by 5:15 p.m.  If everything runs accordingly we should be done by 8. Hosting this event is our Athletic Training Program’s only fundraiser for the year and how we purchase supplies. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. We are extremely grateful for and appreciate your commitment in helping with this event if at all possible. As always, the goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete and thorough pre-participation examination screening that will provide student athletes with a valid VHSL physical for the entirety of the 2019-20 academic year. Each year it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports.

Volunteers and student athletes may register for sports physical night, and find out more information here: https://www.fcps.edu/athletic.preparticipation.screenings.

Standards of Learning Test Schedules for Students Observing Ramadan

This year, the main Standards of Learning (SOL) testing window has significant overlaps with Ramadan, the Muslim holy month marked by daily fasting. The SOL testing window begins for high schools on Monday, April 29, and for elementary and middle schools on Monday, May 6. All schools must complete SOL make-up tests and retakes by Friday, June 7. Ramadan begins the evening of Sunday, May 5, and ends with Eid-al-Fitr on Wednesday, June 5.

FCPS welcomes and encourages engagement with parents and guardians of students affected by this overlap. School staff will work with parents and guardians to make schedule adjustments or determine how best to address students’ needs. For example, it may be possible to schedule testing early in the day when energy levels are likely to be highest.

If you have a child in an SOL grade-level who will be fasting to observe Ramadan this year, notify the principal or school counselor to take advantage of possible scheduling options.

View more ideas and tips to prepare for upcoming testing during Ramadan.

SOL Season - Personal Electronic Devices are Prohibited

As SOL season is approaching, we want to remind families that electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) are prohibited inside the SOL testing environment.

Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern.  In past instances, a student’s access to a personal device in the testing environment has been identified as attempted cheating, please don’t let this happen to you!

Let’s work together to create a positive and safe testing environment for everyone.

For the full testing schedule, please visit the Woodson Testing Calendar site.

Course Requests for 2019-2020

All students have had an opportunity to complete academic advising for the 2019-2020 school year. Staffing for next year’s courses is dependent on student course selections.

To ensure that we have accurate course registration numbers, please review your child’s requested schedule in SIS ParentVue or StudentVue (click “Course Request” on the menu on the left hand side).

Contact your child’s school counselor by email with any schedule change requests.  Please do this as soon as possible.  If no changes are needed, you do not need to contact the counselor.  If your child applied for an academy class, he/she will be notified of the academy’s decision in the beginning of April.  If accepted, course changes, including adding the academy class to your child’s course request list, will be made at that time.  Friday, May 31st will be the last day to make course selection changes for the 2019-2020 school year.
