Colvin Run will be participating in National Walk/Bike to School Day, May 8th. This is a great way to encourage physical activity, reduce traffic congestion, educate students about bicycle safety, and highlight bicycling issues. We will share bicycle safety tips on the CRES411 morning news show.
Students who ride their bikes to school will get preferential parking near the back of school. To make the event more fun, students are encouraged to be creative by decorating their bikes with streamers, signs or balloons. They can put stickers, school decals, plastic flowers or other fun decorations on their helmets. Adults should help students make fun but safe decisions (make sure the bike is still safe after decorating). These bicycles will be on display at recess as well.
If you cannot walk/bike to school, consider walking/biking to your bus stop, the end of the street, or the end of your driveway. Parents, please take a picture of your child or neighborhood group and send it to cresdragons@gmail.com by 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 8th. We will be selecting photos of our participants to include on the Colvin Run website and in our May 8th “On The Run” newsletter. We will also be giving out a prize to students who participate in the event. On May 8th, please encourage your child to stop by the table in the front lobby to get a sticker and bicycle charm if they participated.
Please share these safety tips with your child:
- Ride with an adult.
- Wear brightly colored clothes and reflective gear.
- Keep shoe laces tied
- Ensure bike tires are fully inflated and brakes and gears work.
- Wear a helmet.
- Watch for vehicles going in and out of driveways.
- Stop before crossing the street, entering a road, or turning.
- Obey traffic laws.
