Kent Gardens truly has an amazing staff! Thanks to our wonderful parents and PTA for supporting and recognizing all of them this past week. As you all know, our teachers routinely go above and beyond in their work with your students. We appreciate their hard work and commitment. Thanks again for the amazing week! The staff truly felt appreciated. It is our partnership that makes us stronger together! #kgpride #strongertogether
SOL Calendar: Kent Gardens’ students in Grades 3-6 will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests from May 7 through May 30, 2019. Testing will begin at 8:50 a.m. on each of these days.
As your child prepares for testing, here are some tips for parents to support their students.
- Know when the SOL tests are given. Mark those dates on your family calendar.
- Display a positive attitude about the SOL test. Help your child understand that tests are a part of school and life.
- Encourage your child to stay relaxed and calm during the SOL tests. If your child gets nervous about tests, give him or her ideas of ways to stay calm.
- Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a good breakfast before the SOL tests.
- Remind your child to bring his or her glasses to school on all of the testing days.
- Make sure your child is at school on time so that he or she won't feel rushed on the testing days.
- Encourage your child to try hard and do his or her best every day in school.
- Help your child keep the tests in perspective. It's one indication of student achievement- not the measure by how we determine whether or not your child is worthy.
- Be your child's number one achievement cheerleader!

Kent Gardens Electronic Device Policy for SOL Testing
-
Cell phones and other electronic devices: While in the testing room, students may not have access to cell phones or other electronic devices that can transmit, receive, photograph, or record information while any students are testing. This includes cell phones, Apple watches, Fitbits or similar devices.
- Students who refuse to remove their cell phones or other electronic devices from their work area (such as from pockets, desktops, purses and backpacks stored within reach, etc.), will not be permitted to test until the device is secured (as local policy permits).
Consequences of having a cell phone/mobile device in the test environment
- The cell phone/electronic device should be confiscated by testing personnel and turned over to school administration
- School administration has the authority to ensure that no evidence of cheating is stored on the phone. Such as photos of the test questions, or text messages asking for answers
- School administration must stop searching if it becomes clear that no such evidence exists
Ramadan and SOL Testing: This spring, the SOL non-writing window will have a significant overlap with Ramadan, the Muslim holy month marked by daily fasting from sunrise to sunset. If this impacts your child, please contact Pier McGrath, psmcgrath@fcps.edu and/or Tia Hawkins, tnhawkins@fcps.edu so they may work with you to create a plan that best addresses your child’s needs.
Positivity Character Strength – www.posproject.com The positivity lesson for the week of May 6 – May10 is leadership. This character strength focuses on the personal qualities of leaders, rather than the practice of leadership. It is concerned with getting others to do what needs to be done while maintaining group morale to ensure readiness to act in the future.
Wednesday, May 8, is National Bike to School Day This event is great for encouraging physical activity, building a sense of community, and having fun! Walking and bicycling to school enables children to incorporate the regular physical activity they need each day while also forming healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Encourage your child to ride their bike to school that day.
MTC with the partnership of Creative Cauldron put on an amazing show! Well done!
