Principal's Message

Dear Wolftrap Families,

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of the parents who coordinated the most successful 5K we have ever had. Wendy Rosner led the efforts with a tremendous committee of dedicated volunteers. Please see more details in this newsletter about the day!

CHANGE OF TRANSPORTATION AND EARLY DISMISSAL ONLINE

Families can now submit a temporary change of transportation request as well as early dismissal requests online. More information on the process can be found here
If you prefer not to submit an online form, you can continue to submit requests via telephone at 703-319-7373.

CLASS PLACEMENT OPTIONAL ONLINE PARENT SURVEY

Class placement is a very difficult and complicated process. Wolftrap staff devotes their expertise and time toward creating classroom assignments which promote an optimal learning and social environment for all students. This practice ensures that each classroom is well-balanced by academic need, mixes social groups from year to year, and stays mindful of supportive and distracting peer relationships. We take pride in the familiarity our teachers have with each of their students as they work together to create new groupings for the following year. I invite you to share information with us about your observations outside of school that may be relevant to the placement process. Parental perspective is especially useful to help us see the growth that a child has made over several years and to be aware of peer relationships outside of school.

Please understand, however, teachers must consider many different factors in order to create balanced classes for the next grade, and we cannot consider requests for particular teachers. The link for the optional survey for parental input is here

You will have the opportunity to take this survey starting on May 6 and ending on May 17. Input provided after this date will not be considered.

TDAP IMMUNIZATION - RISING 6TH GRADERS

Effective July 1, 2006, all students in Virginia must receive a booster dose of Tdap vaccine prior to entering Grade 6, if at least five years have passed since the last dose of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine (DTP, DTaP, DT, or Td). Proof of this immunization must be provided to the office. Rising sixth graders will NOT be assigned a teacher for next year until the office receives this proof.

Sincerely,

Teresa Khuluki

Principal

Message from the PTA

National PTA

Hello from the PTA!

Wow- What a great turnout for the 5K! This year was a record setting year in both participants and in funds raised! Thank you to all parents, students and Wolftrap Elementary teachers/staff who participated in our annual 5k this weekend and congratulations to all of the basket and auction winners. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and your participation and generosity directly impacts our ability as a PTA to sponsor school activities throughout the year. A special thanks to our 5K Committee Chair Wendy Rosner and her amazing team who made this event a record-setting success! They went above and beyond this year and the at least 50 K raised will support our school, our teachers and our students.

Speaking of supporting our school, our last PTA meeting of the year will be Friday May 10th at 8:45am in the Teacher’s lounge. At this meeting we will be discussing and voting on ways to further support our school as well as volunteer opportunities available through the PTA for next year. Please join us and be an active part of the discussion and decision making.

Finally, Reminders:

· This week is Teacher Appreciation Week! We will be celebrating our teachers Hawaiian-style. Remember to check your sign-ups and bring in goodies/assigned items in order to ensure our teachers feel extra supported and appreciated this week. They deserve it!

· This week is also National Bike/Walk Challenge week. See this edition of The Connection for more information on how to participate.

· May is SOL season. Please keep that in mind when you are entering and leaving the building or participating in any activities on the Wolftrap campus during school hours. It is extra important that we are all quiet and courteous so that our students have the best environment during these SOL weeks.

Another Successful 5K

The 14th Annual Wolftrap 5K & Fun Run Is Over!

Thank you Wolftrap Community!!! This year's 5K once again set a new record -- we had nearly race 750 registrants! We're still working through the numbers, but our current estimate forecast a record setting profit -- all of which will go to benefit our school!

Congratulations to all of our race winners, especially our top Female winners (Raquel Lewis, Sarah Kehrt, Ms. Davis) and our top Male Winners (Charlie Heisterkamp, Christopher Robinson, Timothy Rooney), as well as our top students (Raquel Lewis and Isaac Norman) and our top teachers (Ms. Davis & Mr. Batsel)!

We wanted to extend a huge thank you to all of our volunteers, sponsors, donors, educators and attendees -- none of this would be possible without all of those who so generously donated their time, their talents and their financial resources (including teacher sponsorships and raffle basket items)! A special thank you to Corrine Fields, who chaired the new silent auction this year -- which raised over $10K toward the race total!

Thank you to the entire 5K Committee (many pictured here): Lisa Arnold, Kadie Blaney, Helen Burton, Amy Cordone, Michele DelPizzo, Corrine Fields, Liz Finnerty, Chris Harney, Sarah Helou, Katie Hunter, Jessica Jue, Juhye Lanfried, Jean Lee, Sarah Kehrt, Kerry Lombard, Jo Neuber, Audra Bowcutt O'Rourke, Wendy Rosner, Amanda Ryan, Michelle Tierney, Beth Verderese & Lindsey Viscomi,  Els Van Berkel

Bike/Walk Challenge and Walking Wednesdays

May 6-10 is Bike/Walk Challenge week when we compete against other Vienna Elementary schools for the most numbers of walker/bikers/scooters!
As you enter school grounds, members of the Wolftrap safety patrol will be counting as you pass by.

Wednesday, May 8 is the Spring Bike Train. The train will be lead by the Fairfax County Police Department Bike Patrol.  The train will depart at 8 am from the corner of Beulah and Liberty Tree Lane and at 8:10 am from the corner of MacArthur and Rockport. Please see map for the route that departs from the corner of Beulah and Liberty.

Also we still need volunteers to pick up at Cafe Amouri and deliver to Wolftrap. Please signup here and help keep the tradition alive.

Congratulations Wolftrap Lego Robotics Team

lego

Nineteen students from Wolftrap Elementary participated in the “Operation Carderock” LEGO Robotics Tournament at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) on April 26. Wolftrap entered 4 teams in the tournament made up of 4th, 5th and 6th grade students. The students also participated in a First LEGO League (FLL) tournament last fall. All the Wolftrap students performed very well at the tournament. One of the Wolftrap teams, “The Awesomebots,” took 3rd place overall.
The students on the LEGO Robotics team design and build a LEGO Mindstorms robot and then program it to autonomously accomplish various missions. At the tournament, they participate in a robot game, where they score points by having their robot successfully complete as many missions as they can during a 2 minute 30 second timed session. In addition to the robot game, the students also participate in 3 additional judged sessions. These consist of: (1) a teamwork exercise, where they are given a surprise exercise and judged how well they work together as a team, (2) robot design judging, where they show the judges their robot and describe how it works and why they designed it the way they did, and (3) a research project presentation. For the project presentation, each team choses a topic from a list of problems, then researches the topic and presents a solution to that problem to the judges. For the Operation Carderock tournament the topics included: “How can the Navy reduce the environmental impact of their ships while at sea?” and “How do we reduce wear, damage, and corrosion from the ocean environment?” as examples. The team’s overall score is the sum of the points they received during the robot game and the three judged sessions.

All the Wolftrap students performed very well at the tournament. One of the Wolftrap teams, “The Awesomebots,” took 3rd place overall. In total 16 teams participated at the tournament split evenly between elementary school and middle school teams. Financial support for this program is provided by NSWCCD, National Defense Education Program and the PTA. There will be more information on how to get involved with Lego Robotics in future editions of The Connection. Stay Tuned!
