Standards of Learning Test Schedules for Students Observing Ramadan

This year, the main Standards of Learning (SOL) testing window has significant overlaps with Ramadan, the Muslim holy month marked by daily fasting. The SOL testing window begins for high schools on Monday, April 29, and for elementary and middle schools on Monday, May 6. All schools must complete SOL make-up tests and retakes by Friday, June 7. Ramadan begins the evening of Sunday, May 5, and ends with Eid-al-Fitr on Wednesday, June 5.

FCPS welcomes and encourages engagement with parents and guardians of students affected by this overlap. School staff will work with parents and guardians to make schedule adjustments or determine how best to address students’ needs. For example, it may be possible to schedule testing early in the day when energy levels are likely to be highest.

If you have a child in an SOL grade-level who will be fasting to observe Ramadan this year, contact Lea Fadden, School Test Coordinator, at Lea.Fadden@fcps.edu to take advantage of possible scheduling options.

Student Services Updates:

Student Services Updates:

Last week, Franklin students celebrated College Day and discovered their teacher’s paths to college and what colleges they attended.   The week culminated with former Franklin students, current Chantilly High School students, speaking to the school, live during learning seminar. Students learned first-hand, from students who were once in their same situations, how, why and where they are going to college next year.  We loved having our former FMS give back to the Franklin community.

On Wednesday, April 24, FMS students in the College Partnership Program took a field trip to James Madison University.  The purpose of this trip was to inspire students toward preparing for the college selection process as they enter high school.  On this trip, students were given a walking tour of the campus, information about college admissions and experienced JMU student life by having lunch in the JMU student dining hall.  Students also had an opportunity to visit the JMU bookstore, where some students decided to purchase items with the JMU logo.  Go Dukes!

This week, 8th grade students developed their 4-year high school plan in Naviance Family Connection with their school counselor.  This plan can be modified at any time through the Naviance portal.  It was an awesome academic planning exercise to prepare students for thinking about high school courses.

tech corner

How much screen time? That is a question all parents are asking as technology and mobile technology continues to saturate our society.  We have all heard that Silicon Valley executives are not allowing their children to use screens. The article “How much screen time? Silicon Valley parents are still trying to figure it out” by Ana Homayoun of the Washington Post, dives into this topic and shreds some light on the issue and provides resources and tips as a parent.

Screen time at school is also a concern for Teachers and Administrators.  I wanted to let you, the parents, know that devices at school are not used continuously all day.  There's a mix of screen time and non-screen time in each class. The time on the devices is more about student creation and engaging students to explore the curriculum they are learning.  They also use the devices to engage in class discussions and collaborative work.
