Wellness Week

Wellness Week at Fairfax HS!

Dear Family Fairfax,

Another rainy end to an awesome week!  I recently asked staff members for student shout outs—for those seemingly small yet totally amazing things that our students do each and every day.  I am hoping to either use my weekly newsletter, a personal phone call, a personal email, or a personal visit to class to thank and congratulate these students for the “A” game they bring to Fairfax High School. Here are a few recognitions:

  • Lara Nayar and Mae Malloy for being accepted to Governors School for Spanish—Ms. Spector
  • Nicole Kirzl and Susanna Kirchman for helping to organize the Orchestra room and office—Mr. Fowkes
  • Sophia Loh for your consistent great effort in French 4 class.  I am so proud of the progress you have made over the years! -Mrs. Coyle

I have many  more celebrations, and I hope to recognize students in a variety of ways in the coming weeks.

I had a great time at Good News   last Sunday for the matinee.  It was such an incredible show, and I could not believe that almost every one of our Pride on stage tapped.  Complete with tap shoes.  Since I know many of the cast learned to tap for the show,  I left believing that I could tap too, maybe…just maybe.

At parent coffees, in PTSA, and at other events, I have spoken with many in our community about  vaping.  I have spent time collaborating with student leadership and student advisory councils in an effort to understand what the motivation is, and what we can do to support a prevention initiative.   For the most part, our students are telling me that you just “shouldn’t do it,” but I think that any potential side effects just feels too surreal to our invincible young adults.  I believe that the best prevention is an entire, informed community that gets behind a consistent message about vaping with our students.  I will continue to fight the good fight and work with our students and staff on proactive solutions, but I wanted to share a useful resource from the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids that might be useful to you if you choose to engage in a conversation with your student(s) or friends:  LINK FOR NYC  As a matter of fact, I have appreciated much of the literature and information that has been produced by this organization.

With AP tests and SOLs right around the corner, now is a great time for us to consistently remind our students to remain calm.  We are proud of an entire year’s worth of their learning and hard work, and whatever happens on test day, happens, because they are so much more than a single test could possibly measure on a single day.  Please join me in consistently sharing this message with our students—the amazing and whole version of each of them can never be evaluated by a computer or bubble sheet.

In case you didn’t notice last week, we have slightly shifted the structure of this News You Choose.  In response to a request from PTSA (based on a parent’s feedback), we moved to Rebels Need to Know for pertinent and timely information and Rebels Nice to Know for celebrations and additional school/community information.  A special thanks is always due to Mrs. Laura Beatty, AA extraordinaire.  Her patience and passion for ensuring these messages are all inclusive and responsive keeps us all up to date, informed, and beaming with Pride!

Wishing you a restful weekend,

Rebels Need to Know:

Attendance

Daily attendance at school is important for student academic success.  Families are reminded that students are expected to remain in school until the end of the school year, June 13th.  Final exams for 9th, 10th and 11th graders will begin on June 7th and continue through June 12th.   Requests for students to be released before the end of the year will not be honored.  Families are encouraged to keep this in mind when making summer vacation plans.  Thank you for helping to ensure the academic success of your student.

Parking Reminder

The Police Department has received a number of calls in regard to students parking in the surrounding neighborhoods near the school. In light of this, we remind students and parents that parking in surrounding neighborhoods is not permitted.  Thank you.
