Laurel Hill Student Council Association Presents: Coins 4 a Cause
Coins for a Cause is the 2019 service project to raise money and awareness for the fight against Batten Disease. (Batten’s Disease is a rare group of nervous system disorder that effects a person’s vision.
One of our very own Laurel Hill Lions is battling Batten’s Disease and we want to support him and other local students and families. All classes will compete to see how many points they can earn. Silver coins equal positive points. Pennies equal negative points. Any students can bring coins from home and put these in any class’ bucket. Coins will be collected at the start of each school day in the lobby from Monday, April 29th through Friday, May 10th. The class with the most points at the end of the time will win a prize.
How can parents help? There are two more ways to donate:
- Go to DefeatBatten.org, make a donation, and put “Lions” in the “send note of encouragement” box. This will allow us to track how much money came from our school.
- You may also text Tyler20 to 501501 to make a onetime $20 donation.
For more information visit: defeatbatten.org or Facebook: Tyler’s Mission. For questions concerning the SCA project please contact Mrs. Braden (jmbraden@fcps.edu) or Mrs. D’Alelio (kmdalelio@fcps.edu)

Standards of Learning Test Schedules for Students Observing Ramadan
This year, the main Standards of Learning (SOL) testing window has significant overlaps with Ramadan, the Muslim holy month marked by daily fasting. The SOL testing window begins for elementary schools on Monday, May 6. All schools must complete SOL make-up tests and retakes by Friday, June 7. Ramadan begins the evening of Sunday, May 5, and ends with Eid-al-Fitr on Wednesday, June 5.
FCPS welcomes and encourages engagement with parents and guardians of students affected by this overlap. School staff will work with parents and guardians to make schedule adjustments or determine how best to address students’ needs. For example, it may be possible to schedule testing early in the day when energy levels are likely to be highest.
If you have a child in grades 3-4-5-6 who will be fasting to observe Ramadan this year and you wish to discuss specific plans with our school test coordinator, please contact Mrs. Addison Smith, assistant principal before the testing window begins.

Positivity project
Students this week are learning more about “connection and purpose” as one of the character traits that are part of the learning from the Positivity Project. “Connection and purpose means you have beliefs about the meaning of life and your life’s purpose. You seek to be part of something greater than yourself.” Please find a way to discuss this idea with your children as we support their understanding of various elements of the positivity project and how this knowledge can enrich our everyday lives.
