A Message from Dr. Smith
It’s been another great week in Bruin country! This week we celebrated “Laugh More, Stress Less” Week and held our spring spirit week. Each day, events and activities took place and it was great to see students and staff get involved.
In my second week as a Bruin, I was able to listen to input and feedback from several different stakeholder groups. Thank you to our PTSA for sponsoring and supporting the two Meet and Greet nights for our parents and community! On Tuesday during lunch, we held a live poll and many students shared their voice about what makes our school great, along with areas that we can improve. On Wednesday evening, I enjoyed meeting our Minority Parents for Excellence in Education (MPEE) group and their plans to support our students and our school. Seniors participating in Girls Soccer, Girls Tennis and Girls and Boys Lacrosse were all recognized at each of their team’s senior night event.
I was privileged to attend several other events this week, which really captured some amazing things happening at our school.
AVID Program: At Lake Braddock we are fortunate to have an active AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program in our middle and high school. This week, staff from our central support joined school staff and students to learn more about the progress of our program at our AVID Certification meeting. Our students and staff spoke very highly of our AVID program and we are proud that 100% of the seniors this year in our program have committed to college!
Day Prom: Lake Braddock special education teachers and staff worked collaboratively with seven other FCPS high schools to hold the Day Prom at the Waterford at Fair Oaks. Over 40 students with disabilities joined by their non-disabled peers and mentors from Lake Braddock along with many staff participated in this exceptional event. Students were able to dance, eat, make friends and enjoy an incredible day! Special thanks to the Lake Braddock teachers and support staff that made this experience possible.
Lake Braddock Theatre Presents “RagTime”: The spring musical, “RagTime”, opened on Thursday and was an amazing performance. Students from across our performing arts programs came together to bring this show to life. Special thanks to our performing arts teachers, students and many supportive parents that made this program possible. Come out and check it out tonight at 8:00 p.m. or on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. or 8:00 p.m. in the Little Theater!
College Commitment Day: On Friday, we recognized 27 student athletes from ten different sports for their dedication and commitment to continue their academic and athletic careers in college. It was a great celebration of these student athletes as well as their families, coaches, teammates and friends who have supported them along the way. These exceptional student athletes will continue to represent our school with pride at the next level and beyond. Go Bruins!

News from the All-Night Grad Party Committee!
“But my child isn’t a graduate yet – this doesn’t matter to me.”
Ah, but it really does! The undergraduate parents put on a spectacular party for the graduating seniors because they know the next group of parents will do the same for their kids. They pay it forward, as so many LB parents before them have done.
So, it’s time for YOU to play a part in a wonderful Lake Braddock tradition. You’ll have a great time, and you can get a look at what the kids do at the “ANGP” (All-Night Grad Party) before your own child attends!
(The ANGP is designed to stop kids from making poor decisions the night after graduation; it is a blast for the kids – but it’s a true life-saver too.)
We need HUNDREDS of parent volunteers (yes, the party is that amazing!) for jobs large and small, so NO EXCUSES ACCEPTED – to keep our kids safe, we need you… and your spouse and your friend and your college-age-or-older children!
Meet new friends, do your part for the Lake Braddock community, and feel good about helping. Plus, we’ll thank you profusely… because the kids need you!
Thank you,
ANGP Committee
ANGP is June 10th at the Audrey Moore Rec Center from 11:00PM- 5:00AM. Click here to sign up:

Teacher Appreciation Week
Thank a deserving teacher for their hard work!
Do you know a teacher at Lake Braddock Secondary School who deserves a "thank you" for all he or she does? Here's a way to send them one.
Help our PTSA celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week (May 6‐10, 2019) by sending a thank‐you note to an inspiring teacher. Please send a thank-you note to Shelley Yu, LBSS PTSA President at president@lbssptsa.org. Those teachers will be recognized in the upcoming meeting on Tuesday, May 14.
In addition, if you want to do more, you can submit a thank-you note electronically - visit www.thankateacherva.com. All teachers who receive one of our thank-you notes can enter a drawing for a chance to win one of two amazing Virginia vacation packages through a partnership with the Virginia Tourism Corporation.
Thank you for celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week with us and we are committed to supporting our public education, and we know you are, too!
Yours,
Shelley Yu
