A note from Dr. Goodloe:
Dear Rocky Run Families,
We have had a fantastic week at Rocky Run MS! A few highlights:
- Memorials Field Trip for 7th graders. Thank you teachers and parent chaperones!
- Author Fest and Parent Teen Book Club. We hosted five local authors and enjoyed book groups with our families. Thank you to our PTA for funding this awesome literacy program for our community.
- I enjoyed visiting Latin and Civics classes this week and seeing our students demonstrating their Portrait of a Graduate skills! Thank you to our teachers for fostering time in classes for students to innovate, create and communicate!
Staff Appreciation Week - May 6-10:
Next week is Staff Appreciation Week and we are looking forward to showering our staff with thanks for a job well done. Our theme for the week is Relax, no stress...You're the BEST! Would you like to do something thoughtful for a RRMS staff member who has made a difference for a student or your family? Please write a thank you note and it will be shared. We appreciate all of our staff members and their great work for our students.
Dress Safely for School:
As the frequency of warm weather increases, it is important that students come to school in clothing appropriate for the instructional environment and outdoor activities. FCPS Dress Code states: “All students are expected to dress appropriately for a K-12 educational environment. Any clothing that interferes with or disrupts the educational environment is unacceptable...Clothing should fit, be neat and clean, and conform to standards of safety, good taste, and decency. Clothing that exposes private areas or an excessive amount of bare skin is prohibited. Examples of prohibited clothing include, but are not limited to: sagging or low-cut pants, tube or halter tops, studded or chain belts, clothing constructed of see-through materials, and head coverings unless required for religious or medical purposes.
Our main priorities are student wellness and safety, in addition to maintaining a supportive learning environment. If any student or parent has questions about appropriate dress for students, please feel free to reach out to a RRMS administrator or school counselor.
I welcome your feedback, questions and suggestions. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time. I hope to see you at Rocky Run very soon
Sincerely,
Amy T. Goodloe, Ed.D

Student Services Updates
Thinking of taking online math this summer?
Rising 9th grade students who are considering taking online geometry honors this summer, please be advised, some high schools have closed their face-to-face Algebra 2 Honors courses. Prior to enrolling in summer school math courses, please consult your child’s high school about how this summer program will affect their courses next year and beyond.
Courses selections for next year.
At this time, parents are able to see their student’s course selections in Parent Vue. Please review your child's schedule and contact your school counselor for any questions. Please note that June 13 is the deadline to change course requests for next year. Staffing is based on students' course requests and therefore, their course selection requires a firm commitment. Students can be placed in intervention courses based on their academic needs. Please contact your child's subject teachers and counselor for questions regarding intervention courses.
Math placements for rising 7th graders interested in taking Algebra in 7th grade will be finalized in June, after all SOL scores are complete. Students who meet the qualifications (91% IOWA math score, and 500 or higher on the Math 7 SOL) will be placed in Algebra 1 Honors and parents will be notified by mail with an opportunity to opt out if they choose.
Positivity Project
This week's focus was APPRECIATION OF BEAUTY AND EXCELLENCE.
You notice and value the world's beauty and people's skills. You don't take things for granted.
Appreciating excellence and beauty helps an individual experience positive emotions and connect to the world around him/her. It’s an outward facing strength, meaning the individual is focused on the world outside his/her head. And, not only is the individual outwardly focused, but often deeply absorbed in a sense of awe or admiration, freeing him/her to forget anxieties and troubles. And it is associated with other strengths, such as gratitude, curiosity, love of learning, and connection/purpose.
Check out the character card for more details!
National Junior Honor Society
7th grade students who qualify (3.75 GPA or higher) for the National Junior Honor Society have been sent a link to the online application process to their fcpsschools.net account. The process is paperless this year and only students have been notified of their qualification status. If you think your student meets the grade qualification, have them check their school gmail account. Applications must be submitted no later than May 8, 2019.
Under Construction: Renovation News.
- We opened the addition this week including the full Science wing and a few math classes. The students and teaches have transitioned smoothly and there have been lots of smiling faces!
- The old science hallway is now blocked off by a wall and students are doing a great job learning new routes to classes.
- Transformation of the old library into the new Lecture Hall is well under way. New walls are up and construction of additional bathrooms is well underway.
- Visitor parking is designated closest to doors 2-4. Faculty Permitted Parking only closest to door 1. Thank you!
Air Quality: During construction, questions about indoor air quality arise. The most recent air quality tests for April met all standards. The air quality inside the building is monitored at least once per month. Please visit the Rocky Run website to review FAQs related to indoor air quality.
If you have specific questions about the renovation, please email them to Administrative Assistant, AJ Ries, ajries@fcps.edu or call the Rocky Run MS main office at 703-802-7700.
We will post updates, pictures, timelines, etc on this page on our website. This page will also be linked as a static announcement on our homepage as we move through the renovation process.
