Mental Health Awareness Month

and Wellness Week

May is National Mental Health Awareness month. Many students struggle with emotional and behavioral issues that can affect their learning and overall wellness. Schools are often the place where these kinds of issues as well as other mental health needs are discovered and where school-based supports can be provided. FCPS wants all parents and guardians to know that your school psychologist, school social worker, and school counselor are available for consultation and support on concerns such as anxiety, peer relationships, depression or other social and emotional issues. They can also provide a list of mental health resources. Please contact your child’s school to connect with one of the mental health providers. Please click on the following links to learn about resources and ways to foster resilience in your child. Mental Health and Resiliency and Student Wellness: Tips and Strategies.

Standards of Learning Test Schedules for Students Observing Ramadan

This year, the main Standards of Learning (SOL) testing window has significant overlaps with Ramadan, the Muslim holy month marked by daily fasting. The SOL testing window for Hayfield Elementary begins on Monday, May 6. All schools must complete SOL make-up tests and retakes by Friday, June 7. Ramadan begins the evening of Sunday, May 5, and ends with Eid-al-Fitr on Wednesday, June 5.

If you have a child in an SOL grade-level who will be fasting to observe Ramadan this year, please email Mrs. Goldstein at SNGoldstein@fcps.edu if you have any concerns.

End of Year Medication Pickup

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room.

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school. Please be sure medication orders are clear. All information on the form must be completed. Part I must be signed and dated by the parent or guardian. Part II must be signed and dated by your physician. Over-the-counter medication given for headache, muscle pain, orthodontic pain, or menstrual cramps and antibiotic or anti-viral medication do not need a physician signature. More detailed information is available on the back of the medication authorization form.

Over-the-counter medication must be in the original container and clearly labeled by the parent or guardian. All prescription medication, including physician’s samples, must be labeled by the pharmacist or physician. Please make sure that the label clearly states your student’s name, the name of the medication, the dosage of the medication, and the time interval for administration.

If your child will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, your existing long-term medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Your cooperation will ensure that we can safely give your student his or her medication. If you have any questions, please contact your school health room aide, at 703-924-4510, or your school public health nurse at 703-704-6128. Thank you for your cooperation and have a good summer.

Reminder Regarding Teacher Requests

at HES for the 2019-2020 School Year

As we begin planning for the next school year, one of our most challenging tasks is creating class groupings. It is very important to have balanced classes that reflect the diversity of our students. These decisions are made with input from your child’s current teacher. We ask parents who have special considerations to submit their requests in writing, telling us about your child’s learning style, strengths and weaknesses. You may also want to list characteristics of a teacher that would best match your student’s needs. Requests for specific teachers will not be honored. All requests should be emailed to jrlewis@fcps.edu. The deadline for submitting requests is the last day of school for students (June 13). We appreciate, in advance, your support and cooperation with this process.

School Supplies for 2019-2020

Parents, save time, avoid shopping hassles, crowds, traffic, and missing supplies in the stores!  Again this year, Hayfield Elementary is offering the opportunity for parents to order their child’s school supplies directly online.  Here is the information you will need to order:

Orders will be charged sales tax at checkout and all orders will be delivered to our school this year saving you shipping fees.  Supply kits will be delivered to your student’s classroom before school starts. If anyone has questions please contact Ruth Drickey at RIDrickey@fcps.edu or at 703-924-4532.

Registration for School Year 2019-2020

Students residing in our boundaries who will be 5 years old on or before September 30, 2019, as well as students in grades 1-6 transferring from Private/Home Schools or moving into our boundaries prior to the start of the new school year may visit our website and select an appointment to register. Appointments begin in early February and continue throughout the summer.

Please spread the word to neighbors to whom this may pertain. While you are guaranteed enrollment (as long as you physically reside in our boundaries and meet the age requirements) we prefer you register sooner rather than later to ensure we are adequately staffed.

All information pertaining to registration, including eligibility and forms is outlined in the Sign-Up Genius where the appointment selection is available. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f49aca62aa46-20182019

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)

Screening for School-Based

(Level II-III) Services

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in grades K-8. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extensions of the Program of Studies (POS). Teachers, administrators, and advanced academic resource teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services in each elementary school:

  • Critical and Creative Thinking Lessons, Grades K-6 (Level I)

All students in kindergarten through grade six receive level I services which consist of model lessons that are designed to teach critical and creative thinking skills.  The lessons are modeled in all classrooms by AARTs and the thinking strategies are then used throughout the year by classroom teachers and other teachers who work with students. Student responses to these model lessons are used as part of the identification process for AAP services. Parents may also practice the thinking strategies during family conversations and activities. A description of the nine critical and creative thinking strategies can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/advanced-academics/critical-and-creative-thinking.

  • Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)

The AART collaborates with classroom teachers to provide additional challenge through lessons and resources that extend and enrich the POS. Level II services are part of a talent development pool. Students are rescreened annually to make decisions about the need for this level of service.

  • Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Students identified by a local school screening committee for part-time advanced academic services are challenged through models and strategies designed to extend and enrich the POS in the four core subject areas. Students receive direct instruction from the AART at the local school using curriculum from the AAP Curriculum and Resources to Support the Differentiated Framework.  Students identified for Level III services continue to receive level III services through grade 6.

For parents or guardians who initiated a referral for school-based (level II and III) services for the 2019-2020 school, please read the following information. Multiple criteria are used to screen students for all levels of AAP services. Initial screenings for Level II services begin in May of 2019 with final eligibility determined in November of 2019. Level III screenings will take place in May of 2019. Eligibility decisions will be sent in June 2019.

For parents of rising kindergartner students, kindergartners will not be screened for advanced academic program services until November of 2019.

If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Parker at knparker@fcps.edu
