Congratulations, Mr. Morgan

Woodson Band Director, Aaron Morgan was one of the recipients of this year's Wolf Trap Grant.

Wolf Trap Grants are awarded to individual public high school teachers in the performing arts for instruction leading to student performance. Selected teachers for the 2018-2019 school year each received a grant of $5,000.

Many artists and arts lovers trace their initial spark of interest back to a high school performing arts teacher. It’s from them that they learned to express themselves, assert their individuality, collaborate with others—and most of all, discover that distinct sense of excitement and possibility many of us only get from the performing arts. And so, Wolf Trap rewards the teachers who make it all possible—particularly those creating innovative new programs.

To read more about the grants and Mr. Morgan's accomplishments visit the Wolf Trap Grant page.

Programming Class

Programming Class News

Since the beginning of the year, Ms. Millsap's Programming Class has learned skills in the areas of web development, Java, and Python.

The fourth quarter was set aside for students to work on coding projects that inspire them or serve others in our community.  We have many students who are budding game developers.  Some highlights from the game development area include modding the 1993 game Doom by adding additional scenes and including newer software developments.  We have one student who is developing a game from scratch using the Dr. Seuss characters and text from Green Eggs and Ham.

Finally, in an ambitious project, we have a team of boys who are extending their home based projects of creating a virtual reality game using Blender and Unity.  Our classes includes two students exploring crytopology and writing industry based ciphers.

Students are enjoying the freedom and choice they were given here in the fourth quarter.  We are calling this Project 4!

Standards of Learning Test Schedules for Students Observing Ramadan

This year, the main Standards of Learning (SOL) testing window has significant overlaps with Ramadan, the Muslim holy month marked by daily fasting. The SOL testing window begins for high schools on Monday, April 29, and for elementary and middle schools on Monday, May 6. All schools must complete SOL make-up tests and retakes by Friday, June 7. Ramadan begins the evening of Sunday, May 5, and ends with Eid-al-Fitr on Wednesday, June 5.

FCPS welcomes and encourages engagement with parents and guardians of students affected by this overlap. School staff will work with parents and guardians to make schedule adjustments or determine how best to address students’ needs. For example, it may be possible to schedule testing early in the day when energy levels are likely to be highest.

If you have a child in an SOL grade-level who will be fasting to observe Ramadan this year, notify the principal or school counselor to take advantage of possible scheduling options.

View more ideas and tips to prepare for upcoming testing during Ramadan.

SOL Season - Personal Electronic Devices are Prohibited

As SOL season is approaching, we want to remind families that electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) are prohibited inside the SOL testing environment.

Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern.  In past instances, a student’s access to a personal device in the testing environment has been identified as attempted cheating, please don’t let this happen to you!

Let’s work together to create a positive and safe testing environment for everyone.

For the full testing schedule, please visit the Woodson Testing Calendar site.

Sports Physicals for 2019-2020

Believe it or not, it is time to start planning for the 2019-2020 school year.  The first step toward eligibility to participate in any preseason or afterschool athletic event is to complete a sports physical on an official VHSL Pre-participation Physical Examination (PPE) form (only version FEB2017 will be accepted).

The Woodson High School Athletic Training Department will be offering sports physicals at Woodson High School on Monday, June 10th. This successfully completed physical will be good for all sports and out of season practices (green days, yellow days, weight room workouts) for the 2019-2020 school year.

This event is a fundraiser for the Woodson High School Athletic Training Department and goes to support the athletes at Woodson High School.  The cost of the physical is $50 when you register online

We are always looking for medical and non-medical volunteers to assist us for the event. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Mr. Hogge at chogge@fcps.edu, or click on the registration link to sign up.

Don’t forget the student and parent concussion education must also be completed annually!!

Front of yearbook

Yearbook News

Starting today, yearbooks may be purchased on MySchoolBucks for $90 while supply lasts.

Don't let this opportunity to purchase online pass you by.  Last year's yearbook sold out.

Yearbook distribution will take place on Friday, May 24th.

If there are yearbooks left for purchase on distribution day, cash and checks will also be accepted for payment.  Please see Ms. Koby in Room D205 with orders and/or questions.

Course Requests for 2019-2020

All students have had an opportunity to complete academic advising for the 2019-2020 school year. Staffing for next year’s courses is dependent on student course selections.

To ensure that we have accurate course registration numbers, please review your child’s requested schedule in SIS ParentVue or StudentVue (click “Course Request” on the menu on the left hand side).

Contact your child’s school counselor by email with any schedule change requests.  Please do this as soon as possible.  If no changes are needed, you do not need to contact the counselor.  If your child applied for an academy class, he/she will be notified of the academy’s decision in the beginning of April.  If accepted, course changes, including adding the academy class to your child’s course request list, will be made at that time.  Friday, May 31st will be the last day to make course selection changes for the 2019-2020 school year.
