From the Principal's Desk....

Dear Family Fairfax,

Though the weather-related rockiness that ended school today isn’t ideal, with the current pollen situation,  I am welcoming our April showers.  I feel like most of this week has been an itchy-eyed, congested blur, so any relief is appreciated.  I hope that everyone is safe and dry.

At the PTSA meeting on Tuesday, we discussed the current state of our Parent-Teacher-Student Association.  I don’t know how many in our community are aware, but what they do for our students and staff is amazing.  Not only are we thankful for the many staff appreciation gifts, but we are also thankful for the opportunity for our teachers to apply for grants to support our instructional and extracurricular activities and events.   We are so fortunate to live in an area where our generous community is willing to give, not only for their own students, but to all of our students and school community as a whole.  Just Tuesday, they approved grants for students who had won awards at the state level to compete at the national level, and for some of these students, support like this makes their participation possible.  On Tuesday, we also talked about the importance of the PTSA to the All Night Graduation Party and so much more.

I write about this, not only to serve as a sincere thank you for our Fairfax High School students and teachers, but also to appeal to our entire parent community about the importance of your membership and participation.  I know that those days of old, when the world was and felt a little slower, and we could take and had more time for each other are not our current reality.  I know how hard every member of our community works and gives in providing for their family, and I also know and believe that it takes a community to do the work we do at Fairfax.  Next year’s PTSA is in need of increased membership and new board members, and I would greatly appreciate  any parents who are able and willing, to consider participating.  I promise that the principal will be both charismatic and supportive.

Our PTSA is still accepting donations:  Donate

We have rescheduled our sports events tonight, but Good News, our musical, is still ON this weekend as are MCT Fest and Fashion in Motion.  It is a great time to be a part of our PRIDE!

Most respectfully,

Erin B. Lenart

Digital Citizenship:Tips for Parents

As parents in the digital age, being aware, alert and involved in your children’s use of the internet is crucial. What else can you do to keep your child safe on the internet? Digital Citizenship can be described as the norms of appropriate, responsible behavior, its positive and negative impact on self and others, with regard to technology use. It is important for parents to help their child become safe, ethical, responsible and respectful digital citizens. Join the PRC for this workshop to learn necessary supports so all students have a safe online space in which to learn healthy, and respectful technology use at home and school.

Richard Stegman, Andrea Jones and Erika Deem, members of the FCPS Digital Citizenship team will present this workshop for all parents.

Taste Test

Probability & Statistics Taste Test Experiment

Here is a picture from a Taste Test Experiment conducted by our Probability & Statistics students.  Participants were invited to taste different foods, state their taste preferences and identify special ingredients.  This experiment provided a practical means for stats students to learn how to collect unbiased data using techniques in randomization, blinding and blocking.    Good fun was had by all!
