LBSS Weekly News - April 26, 2019

Thank you, Bruin Nation!

What a week!  I have thoroughly enjoyed my first week as a Bruin!  I was able to visit classrooms to see students engaged in lab experiments, digital formative assessments and even a Poetry Slam.  I enjoyed meeting our seniors and seeing their excitement as we helped them prepare for the last several weeks of their high school experience, including prom and graduation.  This week, we recognized and celebrated our seniors in softball, boys soccer and boys tennis for their commitment to their teams and our school.  We also took time to recognize and honor our administrative assistants and professionals for their incredible work to keep our school functioning at a high level every day!  As you can tell, it has been an  awesome week and it has been great to have met so many amazing people that truly love our school and community.

Over the next several weeks and months, I will continue to listen and learn with all stakeholders.  We will have two meet and greet opportunities for our parents and community on Tuesday, April 30 and Wednesday, May 1.  Your voice is important and I hope you will take time to share your perspective on what makes our school great and what opportunities for growth and improvement may lie ahead.

Thanks again for a great week and I sincerely appreciate your commitment to our students and our school.

Have a great weekend!

soccer

Kudos to Coach Wickham and the girls soccer team for volunteering their time and expertise to mentor and support a local (age 6 and under) kids soccer team.  Their commitment to serve as positive role models and give back to our Lake Braddock community is impressive!

Important Information for ALL

News from the Library

This is a notice that from April 23- May 3, students may see a pop-up notification from the library when they log on to school computers.  The message is designed to alert students to overdue library accounts, and will read as follows:

Hey, Bruins- Please visit the library regarding your account. Thank you!

SOL Testing

The Virginia Department of Education established the Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments in order to provide information about student achievement in through various subject areas. Scores from the test will be used to determine whether students fail to meet standards, are proficient in meeting the standards, or are advanced in the standards.

Lake Braddock Secondary School’s testing schedule can be found at: https://lakebraddockss.fcps.edu/about/sol-schedule . It will be very helpful if you can avoid appointments which may take your child out of school during this time period.  Make-up dates will occur as soon as your child returns to school, unless otherwise pre-scheduled through the Assessment Coach, Jennifer Bury. To help your child perform his or her best, make sure he or she has had a good night’s rest, a healthy breakfast, and arrives to school on time.

Cell phone/electronics policy during SOL testing

All cell phones and electronic devices, including smart watches and headphones, must either not be brought into the testing location or be placed backpacks that will be kept at the front of the testing site. Students’ backpacks cannot be near the computer area. While in the testing room, students may not access their cellphone or other electronic device while anyone is testing. If a student refuses to remove their cell phone or other electronic device from their work area, to include their pocket, they will not be permitted to test until the device is secure. Only as students exit the computer testing lab will they be able to retrieve their backpacks. Cell phones MUST be turned off, not on vibrate or silent, making sure the alarm and all notifications are also turned off. No phone can be with students at any time while they are in the testing room.

Any student who is found to have an electronic device of any kind in his or her possession, at any time during this testing session, regardless of whether it is turned off or not, will be removed from the testing site. The cell phone/electronic device will then be confiscated and turned over to the sub-school principal and the student will no longer be permitted to complete that SOL test.

LBSS in the News

Lake Braddock was among the 100 best high schools teaching personal finance as recognized by Working in Support of Education (W!se), an educational nonprofit organization whose mission is to develop the financial literacy of young Americans.  This indicates that LBSS students earned outstanding scores on W!se’s national standardized Financial Literacy Certification Test.  The 100 Best ranking is the only national ranking in high school financial education. Congratulations to all of our students!
