The Week in Review

Welcome Back! We are so excited to see all of our students’ smiling faces as we’ve returned from Spring Break! I hope that everyone was able to relax and recharge as we get ready for the final stretch of the 18-19 school year! I believe the countdown has already begun as we have 34 days left this year. We have a lot going on at Frost, as always. Take a look at all of the exciting things we have going on.

Frost Students Going to Odyssey of the Mind World Finals!

Frost Middle School’s 2019 Odyssey of the Mind team has qualified to compete with teams from around the world at World Finals, the week of May 22 to 25 at Michigan State University.  The team of five 8th and two 7th grade students are all from Oak View Elementary School.  In three of the four years the core team has been together, they have advanced to the Virginia State tournament, narrowly missing Worlds two years ago to Frost’s 2017 team. So, this is a goal we have worked hard to pursue, and a dream come true.

During the four-day tournament, the team will stay in the dorms; foster a team from another region of the world; attend technical and performance-based academic challenges designed to test critical thinking and creativity skills, communication, and collaborative team-work; and compete in solving three time-sensitive problems – Long-term, Spontaneous, and Style. Our Frost team has historically placed 1st in Long-term and Style.

…. You Can Help Frost’s Odyssey of the Mind Team Raise Money to Compete

Frost’s PTA is helping Frost’s Odyssey team raise money with a Chipotle Night on May 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Fair City! Come socialize, support our team, and enjoy delicious food!

The team has also set up a Go Fund Me page through our PTA partnership, which offers a tax-deductible donation. A cash donation of any size is HUGE and very much appreciated! 😉

Frost Team Wins Caring for Our Watershed Award!

Thirteen students from Frost participated in the Student Environmental Action Showcase today at GMU.  Of more than 90 projects that were submitted from schools at all levels across Virginia, only 10 projects were selected as finalists to present their idea to a group of judges.

Liano V., Claire W., Anna K., and Spencer W. presented their idea today and were awarded with $600 to implement their project here at Frost!  We are extremely proud of their hard work and thank Ms. Sue Murphy for her guidance along the way.

Celebrating Military-Connected Students

We wanted to share the success of the April 11 event to celebrate our 143 military connected students! The students all seemed to have a good time – and connected over how many moves they have experienced in their lives so far. Some students have already moved 9 times! Each student wrote a post-it-note for each place they have lived and created an impressive visual of our student’s experiences as military kids. Special thanks to 8th grade students Julia H. and Caitlin T., and their Girl Scout Troop, for providing the decorations and donuts for the students!

#ONE Frost in Action

This segment is aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. I want to showcase what ONE Frost means to us!  At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a monthly basis, departments and/or faculty members will nominate students. I will meet with all of the students who are recognized to congratulate them on their kindness, hard work, and willingness to accept others into their circle.

Jennifer S.- Jen is a caring friend and classmate. When classmates are struggling she will try to help them or seek out an adult to let the adult know the peer needs help. Jen tries to spread positivity to her peers- Ms. Wepking

Ronit A.- Ronit is a very kind and caring person. Ronit has a positive attitude and a willingness to help others succeed. - Mr. Bazan

Anthony M.- Anthony Marraro exemplifies the principle that "knowing my words and actions affect others" in his encounters with students who need emotional and academic support. He always reaches out spontaneously to assist students who are anxious and uses a soothing voice to pacify the overwhelmed student. With a calm and controlled demeanor, Anthony offers a positive and supportive comment and never displays impatience with others. - Ms. Mahung

Logan C.- Logan is a very kind and caring individual. Logan has a positive attitude and a willingness to help others succeed. - Mr. Bazan

Evan H.- I recommend Evan Huynh for student of the month for identifying the good in others. Every day, Evan demonstrates that he values inclusivity and learning from those who think differently than him. He collaborates well with everyone in class and will always push others to do their best and take others' advice on improving his own work. Evan is a welcoming, contributing, and kind member of our classroom community here in English 7.- Ms. Champagne

Helena D. -Helena is patient and polite with all those she encounters. During group work, she encourages everyone to participate, whether those she is with are friends outside of class or not. She urges their contributions and values every perspective. – Ms. Balduf

Ahmed E. - Ahmed is such a positive person and he consistently finds the good in his classmates. Instead of criticizing others, he finds ways to lift them up by sharing compliments or noticing something special. - Ms. Pflugrath

Katherine O. - Katherine is always looking for the positive in people. She is a student who looks past differences towards similarities and tries to include everyone at her table in conversations. She speaks ill of no one; she looks for the good in all. – Mr. Beekman
