A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL KIHM

Dear Longfellow families,
As you may have seen in my note Tuesday, Teacher Appreciation Week is the week of May 6th. Thank you so much to those who have already contributed. Please consider signing up to donate a gift card so we can show our teachers how much they are valued. Our goal is to collect enough gift cards for the 150 teachers, staff, and bus drivers at LMS. Sign up here to donate a gift card today. As you know, our teachers work long hours before, during, and after school to make your children’s education a positive experience. It’s a joy to hear the cheers from the students when they hear their teachers’ name announced over the loudspeaker as I make announcements to raffle the cards off to each teacher throughout the week.
DEADLINE EXTENDED: Place gift cards in an envelope marked “For Teacher Appreciation Week” and drop them off in the LMS PTA “Longfellow Love” mailbox on or before Wednesday, May 1st.
Thank you for your support,
Principal Kihm

LONGFELLOW STUDENTS TO LEARN CPR

Devastated by the loss of their daughter, Gwyneth Griffin, the Griffins were able to pass Gwyneth’s Law in Virginia in 2013, which consisted of three parts:
1. Public school teachers must be trained in CPR.
2. CPR is a high school graduation requirement.
3. All public schools must have an AED on site.
Many middle schoolers do not know this life-saving skill. Anisha Talreja has organized an event for Longfellow students to learn CPR administration on May 1, 2019. Parents and other adults in the community are needed to help with the undertaking of training all of our students.
Only adults can volunteer.  If you are a student who has signed up, it would be greatly appreciated if you could please remove yourself from the signup list so that we can get an accurate count of volunteers. Thanks!
To sign up, simply click the link https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050d44aeaa2fa2f49-cprprogram. Feel free to email Anisha Talreja at cpr.longfellow@gmail.com.

NJHS SERVICE HOURS

Don’t forget that National Junior Honor Society service hours are due on Friday, May 3rd. Students are required to complete 20 hours of community service to meet the requirement. This is in addition to the service hours required by civics. In order to meet the deadline, hours must be SUBMITTED, VERIFIED AND APPROVED by the May 3rd deadline. Students that do not meet the May 3rd deadline will be removed from NJHS and not invited to the end of year pinning ceremony. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Postlethwait (hcpostlethwa@fcps.edu) or Ms. Zachariah (bezachariah@fcps.edu)

TEACHER APPRECIATION MEXICAN FIESTA LUNCHEON – MAY 7TH (TUESDAY)

Teacher Appreciation week is almost here and the PTA plans to show our appreciation by hosting a Mexican Fiesta Luncheon on May 7th.  The PTA Hospitality Committee will provide a taco bar.  Please consider providing some of the side dishes, desserts, or your time to help us make this luncheon a success - https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090F4FA8AE2EABFA7-mexican2.   8th-grade honor students can earn 1 service hour by providing a homemade dessert, side dish, or salad. Donations should be dropped off by 9:30 a.m. in the front office or the library. Thank you for your time and generosity.

OPERATION MEDICINE CABINET CLEANOUT - APRIL 27, 2019
IN CONJUNCTION WITH DEA NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK INITIATIVE

Take advantage of a free, convenient, confidential, and safe disposal of unused or expired medications during Operation Medicine Cabinet Cleanout on Saturday, April 27, 2019. Drop off medications at any of the eight Fairfax County District Police Stations (pills or liquids only, no pressurized canisters or needles) between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Operation Medicine Cabinet Cleanout is a partnership with the Rotary Club of McLean, the Safe Community Coalition and local businesses, in collaboration with the following Fairfax County government departments:  Police, Health, Public Private Partnerships, Neighborhood and Community Services, Public Works and Environmental Services, and the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board.
Drug take back programs are important because they are a safe method for disposing of prescription drugs and are organized and closely monitored by local, state, and federal government agencies.
