We hope everyone has been enjoying time with friends and family over spring break. We have, but are excited to welcome students and staff back next week! As a school, we will revisit routines and gear up for the final stretch of the school year. Amazing that our year has gone so quickly. I had to share the piece of artwork above completed by one of our sixth graders - I am continually impressed by the skills, talents, and candor of our lions and our staff members.
Does your child purchase breakfast or lunch at school? FCPS is asking all schools to remind parents to add money to children’s school nutrition accounts. All accounts must be brought current before the end of the school year in June. If you have questions about your child’s account, email Ms. Lyons at SCLyons@fcps.edu.
Did you know the Lemon Road PTA is making it easy on parents to purchase school supplies for the 2019 - 2020 school year? We are partnering with EPI (Educational Products Inc). Go to the website: www.educationalproducts.com/shoppacks and enter the school ID: LEM016. All lists on EPI’s website are current for the 2019 – 2020 school year. Using EPI, you can save time and have your child’s supplies delivered directly to Lemon Road for the start of the school year. If you have any questions, come to the PTA meeting Wednesday evening or send them an email. A reminder that this week, we welcome school board member Dalia Palchik to our meeting beginning at 6:30 on Wednesday!
Pass on the word to neighbors and friends who have a rising Kindergartener to register at the school AND sign up for Kindergarten Kick Start! This is the first time we are offering a program for our rising Kindergarten class to feel acclimated to Lemon Road and have a preview to elementary school. Register here!
Lastly, we plan to host a thank you luncheon to our amazing office staff (Ms. Nealson, Ms. Rodriguez, Ms. Vaughn, and Ms. Olsavsky). To make this happen, we could use your help volunteering in the school during lunch on Thursday, April 25. If you can volunteer your time between 11 AM – 1 PM, please email Mrs. Castillo at aocastillo@fcps.edu. We also welcome cards, treats, or creative displays of appreciation to recognize them for the work they put in every day. Email me if you would like to contribute!
We hope everyone has a great weekend and see you on Monday ~ Mrs. Castillo
Next week we explore appreciation of beauty and excellence. Appreciating beauty and excellence means that you notice and value the world’s beauty and people’s skills. There are three types of goodness in which positive psychology focuses: physical beauty (e.g. a sunset, song, or building), an exceptional skill or talent, and moral goodness (e.g. a character strength). Appreciation of beauty can generate awe, appreciation of a skill can generate admiration, and appreciation of moral goodness can generate moral elevation. All of these feelings help us forget ourselves and find increased joy and meaning in the world.
So, why does appreciation of beauty and excellence matter? Appreciating excellence and beauty helps an individual experience positive emotions and connect to the world around him/her. It’s an outward facing strength, meaning the individual is focused on the world outside his/her head. And, not only is the individual outwardly focused, but often deeply absorbed in a sense of awe or admiration, freeing him/her to forget anxieties and troubles. On a group level, those who appreciate excellence and beauty make our lives more enjoyable. First, it means that they’re not looking to criticize the world or its people, but instead take pleasure from their excellence. Second, it is the writers, painters, musicians, and filmmakers who help us better appreciate the world around us. It’s due to their admiration for the way the sun hits off a wave or the quiet perseverance of a cross-country runner, that we are able to see the world with fresh eyes.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in grades K-8. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extensions of the Program of Studies (POS). Teachers, administrators, and advanced academic resource teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services in each elementary school:
Critical and Creative Thinking Lessons, Grades K-6 (Level I)
All students in kindergarten through grade six receive level I services which consist of model lessons that are designed to teach critical and creative thinking skills. The lessons are modeled in all classrooms by AARTs and the thinking strategies are then used throughout the year by classroom teachers and other teachers who work with students. Student responses to these model lessons are used as part of the identification process for AAP services. Parents may also practice the thinking strategies during family conversations and activities. A description of the nine critical and creative thinking strategies can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/advanced-academics/critical-and-creative-thinking.
Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)
The AART collaborates with classroom teachers to provide additional challenge through lessons and resources that extend and enrich the POS. Level II services are part of a talent development pool. Students are rescreened annually to make decisions about the need for this level of service.
Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)
Students identified by a local school screening committee for part-time advanced academic services are challenged through models and strategies designed to extend and enrich the POS in the four core subject areas. Students receive direct instruction from the AART at the local school using curriculum from the AAP Curriculum and Resources to Support the Differentiated Framework. Students identified for Level III services continue to receive level III services through grade 6.
Screening for school-based services can happen at any time during the school year but is done school wide in spring to determine services for the next school year. Parents or guardians may initiate the screening for school-based (level II and III) services by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form (available at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/elementary-school/current-fcps) to Susan Langford at Lemon Road Elementary. Multiple criteria are used to screen students for all levels of AAP services.
If you have any questions, please contact Susan Langford at SLangford@fcps.edu.
