Dear Wolftrap Families,
KISS AND RIDE SAFETY UPDATE: Please recall that I have been increasing my communication with you regarding concerns of unsafe driving at both drop-off and pick-up. Staff members on duty have reported parents ignoring the staff member with the stop sign helping students walk safely across the crosswalk. Parents have also been observed speeding in the Kiss and Ride lane and using their cell phones. Please remember that student safety is being put at risk by these dangerous behaviors. Two weeks ago I asked a member of FCPS’ Safety and Security Office to observe and provide suggestions for improvement. I am very happy to announce that after this visit, we have been approved for the installation of a speed hump at the crosswalk. It is my sincere hope that this improvement will increase safety for our walkers and bike riders. Also as a reminder, please do not drop your child off or pick them up along Talisman Road. Children are running across the street and cars are blocking the crosswalk. The only appropriate way to drop off or pick up your child from Wolftrap is to use the approved Kiss and Ride lane. Thank you for your attention to this serious situation.
NEW LOST BOOK POLICY: The Wolftrap Library has adopted a new lost book policy and will no longer be accepting cash or checks to replace a lost book. When your child has lost a book, they have one of two options:
-
Buy a new book to replace the lost book and donate it to the library. Find the title of your child’s lost book on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc. and send it in with your child. Let Ms. Stubbs know that the book is from your child so that she can remove the lost book from their account. (Putting a post it on the new book with your child’s name will be enough).
-
Your child can complete service time in the library to replace the cost of the lost book. For every dollar the book costs, your child will work in the library for that amount of time. Let’s say your child loses a $10 book. They would come into the library during the open hours and help Ms. Stubbs for 10 minutes. Once their “minutes” are met, the lost book comes off of their account and their “debt” is paid.
Borrowing books from the Wolftrap library is a chance for children to learn responsibility. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact our librarian, Ms. Stubbs, at srstubbs@fcps.edu
I hope that you enjoyed a relaxing spring break with your family! The fourth quarter is only eight weeks long and summer break will be here before we know it. We are excited for all of the activities planned in the remaining months of school!
Sincerely,
Teresa Khuluki
Principal

Hello from the PTA! |
Welcome back from Spring Break! We hope everyone is rested and ready to face the last few months of the year. Just a few items this edition:
April PTA Meeting: Thank you to all who attended our meeting April 12th. We nominated the PTA board for next year, discussed safety issues related to kiss and ride (we are going to get a speed bump!) and Beulah road cross walk, the 5K and much more. As always the minutes will be available on our website here once they are approved at our next meeting. Remember, it is never too late to get involved. Whether you have come to all of our meetings or none so far this year we hope to see you at our next meeting Friday May 10th.
Spring Garden Cleanup: Our school gardens are looking better than ever thanks to a school-wide cleanup with a great turnout. More below, thank you to all who turned out!
Volunteers Needed: We are still looking to fill a few committee chair positions (Odyssey of the Mind and Faculty Volleyball) as well as need help on committees such as Book Fair, Cultural Arts (help plan assemblies for our students!) and After School Programs. Volunteer opportunities within our PTA are very diverse in terms of time and type of volunteering required. Some committee responsibilities may be completed entirely from home while others need you to be at school (or other locations) during school hours or possibly during the evenings/weekends. We truly have something for everyone’s schedule. Please contact the PTA Board at ptaboard@wolftrappta.org if you are interested in getting involved in one of these or any other PTA program.
The Wolftrap 5K is this Sunday! It is our biggest fundraiser of the year and should not be missed. See the section later in this edition of The Connection for more details!
Good news! In June 2018, our crosswalk was awarded a Transportation Alternatives Project (TAP) Grant through VDOT of $200,000. The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will be designing the improvements in early 2019 and will set a schedule for completion. Initial expectations are that work will be completed by 2021. The many completed parent surveys in October 2017, and letters of support from our crossing guard, Mrs. Edie Adcock, and Mrs. Khuluki all contributed to this win for our community. Thank you! We look forward to seeing what FCDOT will design to improve safety at our crosswalk. See below for updates from March 2019.
The safety issues we hope the crosswalk improvements will address include: 1) It is only safe to cross if our crossing guard is present. 2) Cars do not stop for pedestrians at the crosswalk. 3) Cars drive around cars stopped for pedestrians at the crosswalk. 4) Cars are driving over the speed limit, and the speed limit is ambiguous, either 25 or 35mph. 5) Traffic volume and speed is so great that we cannot walk home safely from after-school or evening activities when the crossing guard is not present.
In January 2019, members of the Beulah Road Safety Committee inquired with VDOT if the 35mph speed limit on Beulah Road would meet criteria to be lowered to 25mph to increase safety of pedestrians crossing. Vehicles with speeds well above 35mph approach the crosswalk from the north direction, endangering pedestrians in the crosswalk. Updates will be posted as information becomes available.
If you would like to contact the Beulah Road Safety Committee about the crosswalk or other concerns, email alison.gramann@gmail.com and peterwintermute@gmail.com
The March 2019 Hunter Mill Highlights newsletter from Supervisor Hudgins included this update with other transportation notes:
Beulah Road Crosswalk Pedestrian improvements are coming to Wolf Trap Elementary School in Vienna. The project will bring improvements to the school’s main crossing on Beulah Road at Talisman Drive. The improvements will provide 7-foot to 15-foot bump outs and an 8-foot median refuge for the crosswalk (which creates a possibility of a future pedestrian beacon device), and creation of a southbound right turn lane, on-road bike lanes, and transitional median striping as road diet treatments. This will help further the protection of the crosswalk while enhancing the features of the road diet and help deter illegal passing on the road. Peak arrival and departure hours will still be patrolled by a crossing guard.
Enjoy coffee at Walking Wednesdays? Volunteers are greatly needed to pick up at Cafe Amouri and deliver to Wolftrap. Please signup here and help keep the tradition alive.
Mark your calendar!
Vienna Bike/Walk Challenge week is May 6-10. Our Spring Bike train will be held May 8. We will be running 2 bike trains this year. One from the south side of Wolftrap boundary and the other from the corner of Beulah and Liberty Tree. Details to follow.
Talisman Reminder
To reiterate Ms. Khuluki's message, please remember that there is NO Parking along Talisman directly outside the school during drop off and dismissal times. Thank you for helping to keep our children safe on their way to school!

We have a few more April and May dates available before we wrap up this program at the end of May! Volunteer today! |
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Spring Box Tops contest. Together, we collected 2115 Box Tops and earned $211.50 for our school. Congratulations to the winners of the contest: Julia Schumer and Jessica Baker. Also, thank you to Ms. Cubbage’s class who contributed the most Box Tops and Ms. Burdett’s class who had the highest level of student participation. Everyone did an awesome job raising money for the school. Keep up the great work and remember to ask friends, family, and neighbors to clip and save Box Tops for our school. Over the next few years, the Box Tops program will go completely digital. Soon, you will have the opportunity to earn Box Tops digitally by scanning receipts. Click here to learn more about these program changes.
