We had a great pep rally on Friday. I am still amazed at the amount of student-to-student support there is in our building. I see so many of our students working together to get things done, and it is so comforting to watch them. I know that our teachers appreciate the comradery and the spirit of Family our students display.

Schools have been asked to continue to remind parents that have Food and Nutrition debts to please bring account debts to zero. These debts could be an inhibitor to a student fulfilling all requirements to receive their diploma.

The PTSO met this week and while I love the company of the Family members that come out regularly, we need to have the input from the silent majority. We will posting the next meeting date which will be in May, shortly. I hope to see many of you there.

Just as a heads up, with Friday being the last day before Spring Break, we had A LOT of students and families that escaped early. This led to a number of students checking out of the attendance office, and causing the attendance staff to be backed up. So if you received a call that your student was not present for a class, but you sent in a note or called in, please know that the attendance for your child will be reconciled before he/she returns. I would like to thank all of you who were able to take the time to send in notes with your child. This helps the process go much faster, and students are able to get their passes much quicker. And if you happen to find yourself in the building sometime over the next couple of weeks, please stop into the Attendance and Front Offices and thank the wonderful ladies who have covered for our normal Wonder Woman. All of these ladies have stepped up and ensured that we function without missing a beat!

Please encourage your students to get plenty of rest over the spring break. I look forward to their return and to us finishing the school year on a true high note. I will be taking some time off to spend with the family, but will be sending safe wishes to each of you. Thank you once again for sharing your most precious gifts with us. It’s been another awesome week of learning for me. Take care. #OneStallion

Attendance

We need your assistance as Spring Break approaches. If you know your student will not be in school or will need to check out early, please let us know as soon as possible. To do this you may:

  • (Preferable) Have your student drop a note from you by the Attendance Office when they arrive at school. They in turn will be given a pass for dismissal. This assists us so that instructional time is not interrupted delivering passes to classrooms and ensures that your student is dismissed when you have requested.
  • Call the Attendance line at 703-446-1625 and leave a message as to the date and reason for absence.  This can be done in advance.

We truly appreciate your assistance with this due to the volume of calls and early dismissals leading up to Spring Break. Friday is not an early release day.

Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop

Fairfax County Public School Students Make Prom Dreams Come True

Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) marketing students from Centreville High School and the Fair Oaks Classroom on the Mall program are opening their annual Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop on Friday, April 12th. The dress shop, which has been in business for thirteen years, has helped hundreds of financially challenged students attend prom in style each spring. Donations of stylish, high-quality, dry-cleaned prom dresses and select accessories can either be dropped off in the main office of Centreville High School between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. or at the shop in Fair Oaks Mall during the shop hours listed below.

Centreville High School Fashion Marketing students started collecting donated dresses in 2006 as a way to combine their interests in fashion with community service. They quickly came to the conclusion that students would not feel comfortable “shopping” for a dress at school. They decided that the shop should be set up in another location to give students a more authentic shopping experience, which led them to partner with the Fair Oaks Classroom on the Mall program.

The Classroom on the Mall students apply the retail marketing and visual merchandising skills learned throughout the school year to transform their classroom into the Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop. “This is an excellent opportunity to accomplish several goals at once,” said Miranda Schick, Centreville High School and Classroom on the Mall Marketing Teacher. “First, students apply marketing lessons learned to a real-world retail environment. Second, they support the School Board’s goals of helping students succeed beyond the classroom through their ‘Portrait of a Graduate’. This includes communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and global citizenship skills.”

The Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop is located on the upper level of Fair Oaks Mall behind the white barricade next to Build a Bear Workshop. Students from any area high school, not just Fairfax County Public School students, who are in need of a prom dress, and do not have the funds to purchase one, can come and shop from hundreds of donated dresses and accessories. They must show a valid student ID, or other form of school identification, in order to select a free dress during the following store hours:

Friday, April 12th                              4:00 p.m.—7:00 p.m.

Saturday, April 13th                          2:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m.
