Virginia State Standards of Learning (SOL) Testing
Testing will take place 5/6 - 5/31
Dear Mustang Families,
With the end of the 2018-2019 school year upon us, so are the Standards of Learning (SOL) exams. Starting Monday, May 6, students in grades three through six across Fairfax County and the state of Virginia will participate in these end-of-year summative assessments. All year long, our students, teachers, and staff have been working diligently toward showing what great learning occurs at Franconia Elementary School. These tests serve as an opportunity for us to do just that!
Students will take all exams from computers. Teachers and students have been preparing for these “Technology Enhanced Tests” by regularly utilizing our mobile computer labs to complete quarterly and unit assessments, SOL practice items, and enrichment programs through a variety of websites and formats.
Our SOL testing window this year is May 6 – May 31. Most of our tests will now run over multiple days, increasing the amount of testing days within our set window. Please plan family trips accordingly, particularly around Memorial Day weekend.

CAT Testing – Reading & Math Assessments
A Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) is an assessment that is customized for every student. How a student responds to a question determines the difficulty of the next item. A correct response leads to a more difficult item, while an incorrect response results in the selection of a less difficult item for the student. Because of the nature of this test, students will not be permitted to go back to a question they previously answered. This test will contain approximately half the amount of questions on typical SOL exams. Our grade level teams have been utilizing practice tests to adjust to this new format. More information on CAT assessments can be found here:
http://doe.virginia.gov/testing/test_administration/cat/index.shtml
Expedited Retakes (all SOL exams)
For each SOL test, students in grades 3 through 8 with a scaled score in the 375-399 (400 is a passing score) range are allowed one opportunity to retest during the same testing window. Parents of students scoring within the range will be contacted as soon as possible. Parental permission must be obtained in order to retest an eligible student. School personnel will work with each student and his/her parent/guardian to determine if a retake is in the best interest of the student. More information on Expedited Retakes will be distributed in flyer form closer to the beginning of the testing window.
Parent Support
You can positively impact your child’s performance on these tests by doing the following:
- Make sure your child gets enough sleep.
- Provide a healthy breakfast each morning.
- Ensure your child arrives to school on time.
- Share a positive attitude about test-taking.
Electronic Devices
Students are strongly encouraged, though not required, to leave personal devices (cell phones, etc.) at home on the day of SOL testing. Any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to test security violations and that in some situations, student’s access to a personal device in the testing environment could be identified as attempted cheating.
