Come Visit Our Poetry Fence (All Grades)
April is National Poetry Month. As we continue to find creative ways to grow our sense of a school community, we built our “Poetry Fence”, located in the lobby. Students, parents and Staff are encouraged to write a poem or print a poem to share. Tape it on the fence for others to enjoy. This fence is inspired by a story about woman in Alexandria who created a Poetry Fence on which neighbors share poetry and other thoughts. Please click here to read more about this creative way to share and be inspired.
During National Poetry Month, we are encouraging students, parents, and staff to “Add a poem. Share a thought. Describe a feeling. Make it funny. Make it serious. Make a connection.” Next time you are in school, we hope you take time to enjoy our students’ work and maybe post some yourself!

Hoops for Heart Success! (All Grades)
Congratulations CRES! Ms. Kurts and Mr. Ferriere are very excited to share that we raised $6,805 for The American Heart Association during our Hoops for Heart drive! This is a HUGE increase over last year’s total of $5,232. The American Heart Association is very close to Ms. Kurts because this organization provided funding for research to help her mother, who had heart surgery. The money that our students raised will help the American Heart Association research better ways to promote good health, and provide everyone with different ways to keep their hearts and bodies healthy.
Students learned different ways to be healthier at a young age in P.E. classes and worked on their basketball skills in class for a two-week period. Taking part in Hoops for Heart was a fun activity for the kids and the teachers.
Thanks to all who raised money for this great cause!
AAP Levels of Service Information (All Grades)
CRES provides AAP services and curriculum to all of our students, but do you know how that looks for your child? Click the links below to learn more about our approach to these levels and answers to the most common questions we receive about the AAP Program. This information is especially helpful during this time of year when Level IV AAP placement letters are sent to students screened for potential placement in an FCPS Level IV AAP classroom. Click to read the most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) by parents and visitors as well as some helpful talking points, parents have requested, regarding how they can address some of the questions and concerns students and parents have asked in the past. We hope you find these resources helpful to better understand how CRES provides students with an enriched curriculum and experiences with a focus on integrating Critical & Creative Thinking Strategies for all students.
Though written specifically to 2nd grade families, the helpful talking points information is applicable for all families.
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in grades K-8. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extensions of the Program of Studies (POS). Teachers, administrators, and advanced academic resource teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the levels of school-based services in each elementary school.

I LOVE MY SCHOOL poster (All Grades)
As we celebrate our work together as a school community, we want to offer our students, staff, and families an opportunity to highlight the amazing things that happen at CRES. This school is a special place because of the collaboration between our staff, parents, and community to help students discover their passions, embody our character traits, and realize their potential. To recognize all those who work to help grow our school, please click here to download a I LOVE MY SCHOOL page to capture a story, a moment, or a feeling. Return a completed sheet to the Front Lobby. We will post these in our lobby during the Support Staff, Teachers, and Volunteer Appreciation Celebrations (April 22-May 17th)
4th Grade Secret Garden book project- Tulip Garden (4th Grade)
In STEAM Lab, our fourth grade students have been participating in an international study of seasonal change through a tulip test garden. We planted tulip bulbs in the fall and now our tulips have emerged and bloomed in front of the School! We hope you have a chance to enjoy their beauty! This project is being completed in conjunction with the 4th grade book study of the Secret Garden. Thank you to Ms. Blackwell and the Fourth Grade teachers for creating this unique opportunity for our fourth grade students.
Springtime events occur at different times in different places across the globe. You can even watch the wave of spring as it moves across the globe by using the animated map!
Journey North keeps garden observations in a permanent database. With long-term data, important scientific questions can be explored: How do the Earth's different climate conditions affect plant growth? What patterns do the data reveal? Are variations normal? How does this spring compare with previous years?
