Parents,
FLES/LTC Arabic
Students in all grades started to put a simple complete sentence together; example: (today is Monday; today is sunny; I like dogs, fish live in the water) Adding high frequency words (I like, I see…….). In writing, students are learning the Arabic alphabet, they started to write two letters words(example mom, dad, brother.)
FLES 1st and 2nd grades
During the third quarter, first and second grades were learning about animals (Pets, Farm, and wild Animals, animals’ needs, how they move) and Animal Habitats (Environment, Nature and Food Chain) and animals camouflage (for second grade). To reinforce animal and Habitats unit, we will read a book translated in Arabic” called; “Can I Live in Your House.” At the end of the unit, the students will present and describe to the class their favorite animals.
5th grade: The Science of Sound
Students were learning about sound; what is sound? How is it produced? How does sound travel?
What are some uses of sound by people and animals? They learned solid, liquid and gas.
They also learned the 5scenses includes listening to music from around the world.
We focused on communication and music as the uses of sound by people and animals. At the end of the unit, students wrote messages to each other and they designed (cup and string phones) to send their messages.

Advanced Academic Services
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in grades K-8. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extensions of the Program of Studies (POS). Teachers, administrators, and advanced academic resource teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services in each elementary school:

Critical and Creative Thinking Lessons, Grades K-5 (Level I)
All students in kindergarten through grade six receive level I services which consist of model lessons that are designed to teach critical and creative thinking skills. The lessons are modeled in all classrooms by AARTs and the thinking strategies are then used throughout the year by classroom teachers and other teachers who work with students. Student responses to these model lessons are used as part of the identification process for AAP services. Parents may also practice the thinking strategies during family conversations and activities. Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-5 (Level II)
The AART collaborates with classroom teachers to provide additional challenge through lessons and resources that extend and enrich the POS. Level II services are part of a talent development pool. Students are rescreened annually to make decisions about the need for this level of service.

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-5 (Level III)
Students identified by a local school screening committee for part-time advanced academic services are challenged through models and strategies designed to extend and enrich the POS in the four core subject areas. Students receive direct instruction from the AART at the local school using curriculum from the AAP Curriculum and Resources to Support the Differentiated Framework. Students identified for Level III services continue to receive level III services through grade 5.
Screening for school-based services can happen at any time during the school year but is done school wide in spring to determine services for the next school year. Parents or guardians may initiate the screening for school-based (level II and III) services by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form (available at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/elementary-school/current-fcps at the bottom of the page in Forms) to the AART at Sleepy Hollow. Multiple criteria are used to screen students for all levels of AAP services. Parents or guardians who submit a referral will be notified by Sleepy Hollow of their student’s eligibility status by June 5, 2019.
If a parent or guardian wishes to appeal an ineligible decision, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee. This new information should be submitted to Caryn Seiler.

Student Holiday
As a reminder, this year’s spring break is Monday, April 15 through Friday, April 19. The Sleepy Hollow Front Office will be closed during break. Classes will resume on Monday, April 22. We wish all of our students, families, and staff a safe and restful break from school! If your child will be absent any additional days surrounding spring break, please call the 24-hour attendance line at 703-237-7070.

April: Month of the Military Child
April is designated as the Month of the Military Child, underscoring the important role military children play in the armed forces community. Sponsored by the Department of Defense Military Community and Family Policy, the Month of the Military Child is a time to applaud military families and their children for the daily sacrifices they make and the challenges they overcome.
The Month of the Military Child is part of the legacy left by former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger. He established the Defense Department commemoration in 1986.
DoDEA joins the Department of Defense and the military community in celebrating April as the Month of the Military Child. In DoDEA communities around the world, our most essential strategic imperatives are: establishing an educational system that progressively builds the college and career readiness of all DoDEA students; and establishing the organizational capacity to operate more effectively and efficiently as a model, unified school system. We aim to challenge each student to maximize his or her potential and to excel academically, socially, emotionally and physically for life, college and career readiness.
Supporting Transitions for Military Families
To help make your transition easier, Department of Defense (DOD) employees from each branch of service provide a School Liaison Officer or a point of contact. School Liaison Officers are the primary point of contact for school-related matters and assist military families with school issues. https://www.fcps.edu/registration/military-families
Virginia Standards of Learning Tests
Students in grades 3-6 in our school will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests between May 7, 2019 and May 31, 2019. It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period. It is also important that your child has a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing.
If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in your child missing a testing day, please notify your child’s teacher as soon as possible.
Pennies for Patients
On April 1st we officially kicked off our Pennies for Patients (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) campaign. Last year we raised $3000 and we have made that our goal again for this year. You can see from the picture that we are nearing our goal!!! The campaign will run until tomorrow Friday, April 12th!
Please remember to send in your change by tomorrow! Thank you to all who have participated in this campaign already.

SHES Volunteers
On behalf of the Sleepy Hollow staff, we would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to all of our volunteers that come to our school and volunteer their services. We have a number of parents that volunteer in the classrooms helping with Wednesday folders and in our school library. As a school community, we thrive on supporting each other to continue making Sleepy Hollow a special place. If you are interested in volunteering, you may contact your child’s teacher.
Autism Awareness
The Autism team is collaborating with each of the classrooms to make a display for Autism Awareness Month. The theme of the display is “If all you see is Autism, you will miss…”.
Each grade level was assigned a different figure that is made of out of different puzzle pieces with words describing people with disabilities. Some examples of words are, “capable, inspiring, kind, teachers, honest, insightful” and so on. Each student will be creating a piece of art of their puzzle piece, which will be used to create the figures that represent Sleepy Hollow’s many inclusive practices.

Student Placements for 2019-2020 School Year
While it is still early to be thinking ahead to next year, we want to give you information about class placements for the 2019-20 school-year ahead of time.The staff at Sleepy Hollow work hard to place students in an optimal learning situation each year. If you have some information that would help us make those decisions, please send your comments in writing to Mr. Johnson by May31st. Please do not list teacher names. Rather, describe the learning environment in which your child learns best.
