Earth Week Activities
"We do not inherit the Earth form our ancestors; we borrow it from our children."
Please see the calendar below for a list of some of the activities our students will be participating in, alongside their daily learning, after their return from spring break! Additionally, don't forget the Garden Grub on April 27th, from 8-11 am. We hope to see you there! There is plenty for all our volunteers to accomplish in order to get our gardens ready for this beautiful season!
From the Town of Vienna Conservation and Sustainability Commission (CSC)
Parents and students are invited to Vienna’s annual Green Expo, which will be held at the Vienna Community Center on April 24th, from 7-9 pm. Come see alternative fuel vehicles, and visit with 30 exhibitors covering composting, recycling, increasing native plantings, home energy efficiency, SolarizeVienna, green landscaping, ways to reduce plastics, and much more! James Madison high school students will talk about "Trout in the Classroom" and their Stream Team, as well as their successful efforts to get solar panels on FCPS schools. Enter a raffle to win a free rain barrel and/or composter! Kids can grab a passport and visit exhibitors, learn about the environment, and earn a prize! See you there!

How a pedagogy of play can enliven the classroom, for students of all ages
Play and school can seem diametrically opposed. School is structured, often focused on order; play, by definition, is not.
But within this paradox of play and school, educators can find meaningful learning opportunities, advancing students' academic skills as well as the social skills that will allow them to thrive in adulthood and enjoy their childhood now, according to researchers from Project Zero (PZ), a research center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Please read the remainder of this article that shares how playful learning is a strategy for students of any age! As an aside, several of our staff members will be attending a conference this summer with these researchers. We can't wait to share with you what we learn!
Play happens in every grade, and in kindergarten, students begin their day with a self-directed social time.
April is designated as the Month of the Military Child; a time to honor the sacrifices made by military families worldwide, with an emphasis on the experience of the dependent children of military members serving at home and overseas.
Flint Hill is excited to celebrate the month of the military child by wearing purple to show support for our students and families on Friday, April 12th. In addition, our active duty and reserve military students will be recognized on the morning news show. We hope that your child will participate and “Purple Up! for Military Kids” on Friday!

An Important Request
This month, during FCPS Family Life Education, students are participating in "Good and Bad Touch" lessons. The goal is for students to identify inappropriate approaches from family members, neighbors, strangers, and others. Students will also identify a trusted adult to go to and for help and how to say, “No!”
While it can be easier for parents to speak with their children about the differences between right and wrong, it is often more difficult for parents to discuss body changes and physical development. At a very young age, children become curious and start to explore their bodies. As children grow older, they continue to need guidance in learning about these body parts and their functions. We are asking our parents to kindly have a conversation with your child about being school appropriate when it comes to body parts. While we understand that it is natural to be curious, at no time is it ever appropriate to expose yourself, ask questions about another classmate's body parts, or touch another person in a private area. We want all of our students to feel safe here at Flint Hill and appreciate your partnership in making sure this happens!
If you feel you need guidance on how to conduct these types of conversations with your child, please reach out to Mrs. Williams or Ms. Lipton for support.
