NOTIFICATION OF TESTING: SOL NON-WRITING ASSESSMENTS, GRADES 3-6

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Students in grades 3-6 in our school will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests between Monday, May 6th and Friday, May 17th.  It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period.  It is also important that your child have a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing.

The Virginia Department of Education requires students in grades 3-8 across the state to take the SOL tests. SOL tests measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills detailed in the Virginia Standards of Learning.  The content areas that will be tested for each grade level are as follows:

3rd Grade Math / Thursday, May 16th

3rd Grade Reading / Wednesday, May 8th

4th Grade Math / Wednesday, May 15th

4th Grade Reading / Friday, May 10th

4th Grade Virginia Studies / Monday, May 6th

5th Grade Math / Friday, May 17th

5th Grade Reading / Thursday, May 9th

5th Grade Science / Monday, May 13th

6th Grade Math / Tuesday, May 14th

6th Grade Reading / Tuesday, May 7th

If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in your child missing a testing day, please notify your child’s school as soon as possible.

The purpose of SOL testing is to provide information about student achievement to the parent, school, school division, and state.  In most cases, test scores are available for parents at the end of the school year.  More information about how and when parents will receive their children’s scores will be shared closer to these dates.

The Virginia Board of Education allows certain elementary and middle school students who fail SOL tests on their first attempt to retake the test before the end of the school year.  Parent permission is required for any retesting of the grade level tests listed above.  If your child becomes eligible to re-take an SOL test and you believe that they would benefit from receiving a second chance to demonstrate his or her knowledge & skills before the end of the school year, you will be contacted directly at that time. A decision not to retest will not in any way impact your child’s course grade or academic record.

If you have questions about these state assessments, please contact your child’s teacher or the School Test Coordinator at your child’s school.

PHOTOS NEEDED!

April is “The Month of the Military Child.” Everyone is encouraged to PURPLE UP! on April 10th and wear purple! In addition, we will create a photo display in the lobby later this month. Spring Fling Book Drive
