Good afternoon Lake Braddock Community,
I just want to take a moment to say "thank you". I have greatly enjoyed my time being part of the Bruin Nation. I have appreciated the warm welcome that I have received from staff, students, and our parents and other community members. This is my neighborhood school so it has been extra special to drive less than 2 miles each day and have this be my home away from home. I have enjoyed getting to know Dr. Smith during our transition time and I am confident that he is going to be a great fit here at Lake Braddock.
I am looking forward to spending the upcoming week camping with my husband and our goldendoodles. I hope you have the opportunity to slow down with your family and enjoy some time together next week.
I am looking forward to returning to celebrate our seniors at Lake Braddock's graduation on June 10th. Until then, all my best and much love to Bruin Nation.

SOL Testing
The Virginia Department of Education established the Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments in order to provide information about student achievement in through various subject areas. Scores from the test will be used to determine whether students fail to meet standards, are proficient in meeting the standards, or are advanced in the standards.
Lake Braddock Secondary School’s testing schedule can be found at: https://lakebraddockss.fcps.edu/about/sol-schedule . It will be very helpful if you can avoid appointments which may take your child out of school during this time period. Make-up dates will occur as soon as your child returns to school, unless otherwise pre-scheduled through the Assessment Coach, Jennifer Bury. To help your child perform his or her best, make sure he or she has had a good night’s rest, a healthy breakfast, and arrives to school on time.
Cell phone/electronics policy during SOL testing
All cell phones and electronic devices, including smart watches and headphones, must either not be brought into the testing location or be placed backpacks that will be kept at the front of the testing site. Students’ backpacks cannot be near the computer area. While in the testing room, students may not access their cellphone or other electronic device while anyone is testing. If a student refuses to remove their cell phone or other electronic device from their work area, to include their pocket, they will not be permitted to test until the device is secure. Only as students exit the computer testing lab will they be able to retrieve their backpacks. Cell phones MUST be turned off, not on vibrate or silent, making sure the alarm and all notifications are also turned off. No phone can be with students at any time while they are in the testing room.
Any student who is found to have an electronic device of any kind in his or her possession, at any time during this testing session, regardless of whether it is turned off or not, will be removed from the testing site. The cell phone/electronic device will then be confiscated and turned over to the sub-school principal and the student will no longer be permitted to complete that SOL test.
Food for Neighbors
Lake Braddock Secondary School is joining Irving Middle School and West Springfield High School to partner with Food for Neighbors, a weekend food program that helps provide food for our students who do not have enough to meet their needs. Food for Neighbors is a local organization addressing this problem by collecting food from our community via the Red Bag Program and donating directly to families in our community. The donated food is distributed to students on Friday afternoons. We hope you will consider participating in the Red Bag food collection program. You can make a difference in a local student’s life by simply adding a few extra items to your shopping cart every 2 months. Even in a county as wealthy as Fairfax, one in four kids in our area are struggling with hunger.
How it Works:
- Request a reusable Red Bag here and Food for Neighbors will drop it off at your house.
- Fill the Red Bag with food items listed on the tag attached to the bag.
- Put the Red Bag outside your front door in the morning on the next bag collection day. (Collection dates are also listed on the tag.)
Your Red Bag is picked up from your house and the food is delivered to Irving and then distributed to students in need. As an added benefit, you can get a tax deduction for the food you donate! With your help, our local students can be fed. For more information on the Red Bag program click here. If you have any questions, or you have a student at Lake Braddock who could benefit from a bag of snacks for the weekend, please feel free to contact Anne Polino at acpolino@fcps.edu or 703-426-1030. The next collection day is May 2nd so make sure to request your Red Bag soon!
