Advanced Academics News

Screening for school based services can happen at anytime during the school year, but is done school wide in the spring to determine services for the next school year.  For more information about that process and the timeline please click here.  If you have questions, please contact Jane Wheeler, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, at jgwheeler@fcps.edu

College Day

 college day

Please mark your calendars!  On Friday, April 26th, the Chantilly Pyramid will celebrate our annual College Day!  Staff members will wear clothing from their alma mater and will speak with students about their college experience.  In addition, Chantilly High School seniors will be interviewed on our morning news show and will visit classrooms to talk more about the importance of college and to answer any questions students may have about college.

Your child is invited to wear clothing from a college of his or her choice or wear Oak Hill spirit wear.

The earlier a child knows and believes he or she can go to college, the more likely he or she will attend.  Our pyramid’s goal is to start the college conversation with our students and families.  We encourage you to ask your child or children about this fun event and let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you for your support!

OOTM April 2019

Oak Hill's fourth grade Odyssey of the Mind team.

Oak Hill's Odyssey of the Mind to the Worlds!

Oak Hill's fourth and sixth grade Odyssey of the Mind teams participated in the Virginia State Tournament this past weekend.  The fourth grade team won first place against eleven other teams.  The team performed a skit about Fruits versus Veggies, with Junk Food trying to split them up.  Congratulations to both teams.  The coaches of the fourth grade team were Mrs. Learned and Mrs. Wagner and the team consisted of the following members: Mehreen Gandhi, Ameya Haldankar, Joshua Learned, Uma Sarkar, Ava Grace Satterfield, Keya Shah, and Jack Wagner.  The team is now off to the Worlds at Michigan State University between May 22-25  Best of luck there!

STEAM Camp

STEAM

STEAM Camp will be held this year at McNair Elementary, with focus on Robots and Rollercoasters.  Please join Mrs. Cosgrove and Ms. Payne for a week of amazing times as your child thinks like an engineer to design and build solutions to real world problems, works with robots such as Ozobots to expand programming skills using scratch and other languages.  In addition, students will design and build a variety of roller coasters, (the sky is the limit)!

Campers must be rising 3rd - 6th grade.  Camp will be held the weeks of July 15, 22, and 29 - pick one!  To sign up please register here

Lost and Found

Over the past few months our lost and found has continued to grow.  Now that winter is almost over, please check your closets to see if you are missing any of your children’s coats.  There are other items such as water bottles, lunch boxes, umbrellas, etc.  Please remind your son or daughter to check here if they are missing any items.  We plan to donate any items not picked up by April 12.

STEAM Wind Turbine

Sixth Graders collaborating to design a wind turbine.

STEAM Lab/Critical and Creative Thinking Lessons

Students at all grade levels are busy using their POG skills to problem solve, collaborate, and share their thinking!  Kindergartners have been looking at the alphabet in different ways and finding letters hidden in their environment!  They will be taking pictures of some hidden letters and we’ll turn them into a poster!  First graders will be talking about our garden and will use their creative thinking to invent “Plantzilla!”  Second graders have been learning about monarch butterflies and are working on a DeBono’s Hats activity, in which they consider different types of thinking about monarchs.  To go along with their soil unit, third graders have considered the beach as a system and how we can help prevent erosion at the beach (and we will do some problem solving for the erosion on the hill by our basketball court!).  Fourth grade is working on a couple of activities, with some students working on a PBL combining their knowledge of wattle and daub houses and storms, and some students working on designing a prototype of a maglev train.  Fifth graders have just completed designing and testing submersibles, to go along with their ocean science unit.  Sixth graders are in the process of designing and testing a mini wind turbine!  Students are loving the hands on experiences and their enthusiasm is amazing!
