Dear Whitman Community,
This is the final week before Spring Break (April 15 – 19). During the break, the main office will be open Monday – Thursday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM each day. However, there will be limited staff available during the week. I hope students, families, and staff take time to recharge their batteries before we return to tackle the last quarter of the school year.
When we return from Spring Break during the week of April 22 - 26, we will be having a spirit week to celebrate the last full week of the month of the Military Child and Poetry Month. On Monday, students should wear green to celebrate Earth Day. On Tuesday, students will be reading selected poems in honor of Poetry Month. On Thursday, we will recognize our children of military families on the news show and with the Military Family dinner in the cafeteria from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Finally, on Friday, we will PURPLE UP!
On Wednesday, April 24, we will have our Whitman Family Market. As always, our families can come by after school and pick up fresh produce and groceries. We always need volunteers to help set it up and to guide parents, students, and staff through the market. Please contact Ms. Montecinos if you can help out.
On Thursday, April 25 after school, we will be having our Spring Dance for students. Tickets will be sold during all lunches in the cafeteria. Students will receive wristbands during lunch on the day of the dance and must have one to enter. If you would like to chaperone, please contact Mr. Fisher, school counselor. We could really use your help!
Thank you for all you do to support our students and let’s make this a great week!

April is the Month of the Military Child
From deployments to new schools, military children are faced with unique challenges that ordinary youth their age never experience. Their ability to adapt to present and future changes deserves respect and admiration. In an effort to recognize the hard work and applaud the courage of military children, the DoD deemed April as the Month of the Military Child (MOMC). It is a time to honor military youth for the important role they play in contributing to the strength of the military family.
It reminds us that the strength of Soldiers comes from the strength of their Families. It also reaffirms the military’s commitment to ensuring excellence in schools, childcare and youth services as well as, providing a strong supportive environment where children can thrive.
Why Purple? Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is a combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red, and Navy blue. Wearing the color purple is a visible way to show support and thank military youth for their strength and sacrifices.
Celebrating the Month of the Military Child provides a powerful opportunity to raise awareness and build support to help these children meet the unique challenges they face! It is an opportunity to recognize and thank military children and youth for their heroism, character, courage, sacrifices and continued resilience.
