This week our students have enjoyed learning about HUMOR which reminds the students to laugh and bring smiles to other people.
Next week we are excited to review the OTHER PEOPLE MATTER MINDSET.

We are so proud of our SCA and all of our students for raising $10,100 for the K9 Caring Angels Warrior Angels project!! That is quite an accomplishment, and they were truly grateful for and impressed by our community’s generosity. Ours is the largest single donation this dedicated non-profit has ever received!
Our SCA worked incredibly hard to excite all of our students to embrace what we have been learning in our Positivity Project lessons about how Other People Matter. All of the money raised will show a wounded veteran with PTSD how much he or she matters by helping to provide them with a specially trained service. As an incentive again this year, the SCA even convinced the principals to participate in our mystery bucket challenge if we raised $10,000. We are so proud to have met and exceeded the goal!
We celebrated this accomplishment Wednesday afternoon with a school-wide pep rally. The SCA revealed the grand total raised at the time - $9,583 – which went up to $10,100 on the spot by a generous member of our community. The SCA officers were so excited to reveal their mystery bucket challenge to the whole school—and turn the principals into a giant ice cream sundae, complete with chocolate syrup, whipped cream, sprinkles and even cherries on top! We are sure the squeals and cheers from the crowd could be hear throughout Centreville!
All about our fabulous 5th grade team:
The fifth grade team at Powell loves teaching, kids, and each other. Ask any one of us and we’ll tell you that we love what we do. We’re so lucky to have a team of educators with a wide variety of teaching experiences who are great collaborators. Most of us have taught together for a few years now, but we were fortunate to get a new team member this year when Mrs. Carlson joined the team. We appreciate the individual strengths each of us have and how it benefits all our students. We’ve taught in both primary and upper grades for a combined sixty-six years!!! The strength of our team is that we all genuinely respect and care for each other.
We enjoy the fifth grade curriculum and what our students bring to their learning experience. We have the privilege of helping students connect with the ancient past in social studies, explore the natural world around us in science, and apply real world math skills to their everyday lives. Fifth graders are at a great age to enjoy all kinds of stories and explore a variety of topics in nonfiction as well. They maintain a fun and inquisitive nature while having reached a maturity level that means they can form deeper understandings of things and meaningful relationships with others.
Mrs. Azero teaches the 5th grade AAP class. She loves being able to challenge her students in inventive ways and seeing them rise to the expectations she has for them. Her favorite part of our curriculum is Science, especially our oceans unit. The kids particularly love that one too. At home, she is the mom of three young children, a son and twin daughters. Mrs. Azero is patient, kind, and always cool.
Mrs. Carlson has a wealth of experience in a variety of grade levels. She appreciates that the 5th grade curriculum is rich and engaging and she values the opportunities we can provide to our students. Her four children have all attended Powell and they range from high school to elementary. She brings her compassionate heart to school with her and she is the consummate nurturer for her students. Out of school, she loves simply spending time with her family.
Mrs. Patterson is a product of FCPS schools and has dedicated herself to making school a fun and engaging environment for her students. She loves teaching 5th grade! Among her many strengths, she appreciates the relationships she can foster with students to motivate them. Mrs. Patterson’s son and daughter were both Powell kids and are now in high and middle school. She also values time with family and friends outside of school.
Ms. Song is our grade level Korean Immersion teacher. We are so blessed to have her. She loves being able to provide students an opportunity to learn curriculum in both English and Korean. She appreciates that much of what she gets to teach is brand new to the students. She values the maturity of 5th graders and how they approach learning. She recently got married and enjoys spending time watching classic movies and reading.
Mrs. Mahony also has a variety of teaching experience from first grade to university level, but she’ll openly admit fifth grade is her favorite so far. She loves being with the kids and helping them grow academically and socially. She especially loves reading and connecting with her kids through literature and encourages her students to try different books. Her two sons are now adults, but both benefited from learning in FCPS schools. Outside of school, she loves spending time with her family, reading, and cooking.
This year, fifth grade is fortunate enough to have two teacher candidates from George Mason University with us. Ms. Ji, currently working in Mrs. Mahony’s room, is a Virginia Tech graduate who hails from Annandale, Virginia. Mrs. Newcomer, working in Mrs. Patterson’s room, is a James Madison University graduate from Warrenton, Virginia. Both have been an invaluable part of our team this year!
During the month, one day is selected as the day to “Purple Up! For Military Kids” and all are encouraged to wear purple in recognition of the strength and sacrifices of military connected youth (MCY). Why purple? Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red, and Navy blue. This year Purple Up day will be celebrated on April 10. For more information on the Month of the Military Child and other resources in FCPS please go to https://www.fcps.edu/event/month-military-child.
CPES thanks our military families for their service and sacrifice.

This meeting is for all parents of students who were found eligible through our level IV AAP screening cycle this year. The meeting will review the components and expectations of Level IV AAP and give parents and students a chance to meet Colin Powell’s Level IV AAP teachers.

Our STEAM lab is creating mini-recording studios and your donations will make this possible! We’d love to have any help you can offer. We are in need of plastic rectangular laundry baskets, no frills or fancy handles. The simpler the better! We can also use foam tiles or foam packaging. Many times if you have order a large appliance or object they pack it with those large foam (not Styrofoam) layers. We’d love to have those! They need to be at least 12” by 12” in size for what we’d like to use them for. Lastly, any clip on lights that you no longer need will also be used!
Thank you in advance for helping our students become creative thinkers! If you can make a donation or have questions you may always email Mrs. Bach, our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher and STEAM teacher at kmbach@fcps.edu. Thank YOU!
