National Library Week is celebrated April 7-13, 2019. Take a moment to appreciate all libraries, especially public libraries and our own Aldrin Library. Rhonda Haydock is a wonderful Librarian and teacher to our students (and teachers).
Aldrin will be celebrating our volunteers later this spring at our annual Volunteer Breakfast; but as this is the nationally-recognized week, we want to take a moment to thank our dedicated volunteers. Thank you to the PTA Officers and Committee Chairs, the Room Moms, the Thursday Folder Stuffers, the Grandparents, the Field Trip Chaperones, the Reading Volunteers, the Math Volunteers, the Mega Volunteers, the Library Volunteers, the Party and Event Planning Volunteers, and the occasional volunteer! (and anyone else!) We couldn't do it without you. Thank you for being part of the Aldrin Family and making a difference in the life of our students!
Mrs. Maher finished the school year on Friday, April 5th to go on maternity leave. We're very fortunate that we were able to secure a long-term substitute several months ago.
Ms. Pozinsky completed graduate school in December and is very excited to begin her career as a school counselor at Aldrin Elementary. Before going back to school, she worked at a newspaper and a magazine, and then later at a counseling center for the past nine years. Ms. Pozinsky enjoys working with students, families, and teachers to help everyone achieve their best. In her free time, she likes leading her daughter’s Girl Scout troop, reading books, learning about dinosaurs, and tap dancing.
April is National Autism Awareness Month. In case you’ve wondered, the puzzle ribbon was adopted in 1999 as the universal sign of autism awareness. ... The Autism Awareness Ribbon — the puzzle pattern reflects the complexity of the autism spectrum. The different colors and shapes represent the diversity of the people and families living with the condition.
Autism is a neuro-developmental disability that impacts a child’s ability to communicate and interact with others. According to the CDC, 1 in 59 children are diagnosed with Autism annually and boys are 4 times more likely to be diagnosed than girls.
Aldrin will recognize Autism Awareness Month with blue pinwheels around the school entrances and a bulletin board in the cafeteria, supported by the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
No, though they certainly are the issue that scares parents the most, Cyberbullying and exposure to age-inappropriate content remain the biggest risks to kids who are active online. Still, the benefits of the online world outweigh the negatives by far.
By staying involved, you can keep kids safe and teach them how to use digital technology responsibly. Start by showing interest in the sites they visit and the games they play, and your job will be a lot easier when they start exploring these technologies more independently.
Strategies for a responsible -- and safer -- online life:
This strategy provides a framework in which students can assess and evaluate a variety of decisions and possible outcomes. Understanding cause and effect relationships helps students recognize the importance of examining the outcomes of multiple decision options before embarking on a course of action. The concept of examining outcomes is relevant for all students as they learn to consider both short-term and long-range consequences in the decision making process.
We'd like to remind parents of the following safety guidelines:
The Aldrin bell is scheduled for 9:25 am. The BEST time to arrive is between 9:00 and 9:10 am. Please do not arrive before 8:55 am. Staff do not take their posts and stations in the cafeteria and gym until then. There is no one to supervise your child until that time.
If your child rides their bicycle to school, please ask them to walk the bike in once they reach the school sidewalks. Students are trying to straight to the bike rack, weaving among walking students and it is dangerous.
NOVA District PTA and Virginia PTA Family Engagement Awards are offered to recognize volunteers, educators, staff members, principals, superintendents, and local PTA/PTSAs for their efforts in building parent and family engagement through a variety of programs that focus on Diversity & Inclusion, Male Engagement, Military Family Engagement, and STEM/STEAM Engagement within their schools and community.
The Aldrin PTA and Administration are proud to announce that Hale’ Brickhouse, PTA Chair of Aldrin’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee has been nominated for a Family Engagement Award. The award will be presented May 5, 2019 and we wish her the best of luck!
Hena Khan will be at the Reston Regional Library on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 2:00 pm. She will read from her book and share her creative process. Ms. Khan's latest book is Under My Hijab. Free copies of the book will be given to the first 10 elementary school-aged students.
Students enjoyed learning about all kids of careers. Firefighters and pilots were big hits with all grade levels.
We welcomed the Class of 2032 on Friday, April 5th. Rising Kindergarteners received a mini-tour of the school and had the opportunity to experience Art, Library, Music, and PE while their parents filled out registration paperwork and received information about kindergarten readiness and resources. .
