Dear Justice Families,
This week, we are kicking off our Shine On week -- a week of positivity and happiness to honor a Justice HS alumna, Casey Schulman, who tragically passed away in December 2012. Events are planned for each day and our week will end with a celebration called Springfest. This event takes place on the football field with free rides and clubs and sports teams selling treats. T-shirts to celebrate the week are for sale for $5 during all lunches this week. Our bell schedule is adjusted for Thursday, with students released at 1:10 for a grab and go lunch before they head out to the field for Springfest. Students will be dismissed at our regular time of 2:55.
We are also celebrating Wish Week to fundraise for the Make-a-Wish foundation which works to grant the wishes of children diagnosed with critical illnesses. Students will be participating in a fundraising competition by class and pizza and bake sales will occur after school on Monday and Tuesday.

 This year, our Science Olympiad team wanted to make sure that they made a lasting impact at Justice, in order to gain recognition and inspire possible future members in the halls of our school. Our wonderful team members worked long and hard preparing for each event that they were assigned, sacrificing many afternoons as well as weekends—and it paid off. Seniors Tiffany Duong and Mindy Truong medaled in two events -- Dynamic Planet [4th] and Water Quality [6th]) along with Sonny Nguyen, who medaled first place for Boomilever, scoring higher than 23 other schools.
None of this could have been possible without the long lasting support of the Justice HS PTSA, who has been one of our greatest financial sponsors!
Senior Cap & Gown photos are April 23rd and 24thin the auditorium. Appointment cards have been mailed to students' mailing addresses.
Students will vote for their Class Officers and Student Government Association Executive Officers. Candidates have made videos that students will review prior to voting and the walls have been covered with posters to help students get to know the candidates.
Hello, my name is Ruth Dejene and I am a junior at Justice. Last year, I started a fundraiser called Wish Week with the National Honor Society. Wish Week is a school-wide and week-long fundraiser that raises donations for the Make-A-Wish Foundation which grants life-changing wishes to children with critical illnesses. When I was 14 years old, Make-A-Wish granted my wish to go to Australia which restored my hope and helped me see the positivity in the world. Through Wish Week, I was able to give other children the same amazing opportunity by raising more than $4,100. We hope to be even more successful this year, with your support. This is the final week of the third quarter and Friday is a teacher workday. FCPS Weekly Progress Reports will not be sent to parents Tuesday, Apr. 2 through Sunday, Apr. 21 during third quarter grading and report card generation, and Spring break. Additionally, the Grade Book and Report Card modules in ParentVUE and StudentVUE will be closed Thursday, Apr. 4, at 4 p.m. through Saturday, Apr. 13, at 6 a.m.
Spring is our busiest sports season and we will often have three sporting events happening at Justice HS at one time! Here are some reminders for our spectators attending our events: outside drinks/food are not allowed, backpacks may be searched, no signs, all school rules apply at home and away games. In addition, all middle school and elementary school students must be supervised by an adult.
College decisions are streaming in for our seniors! We encourage seniors to check their emails and log into the college application portals to view their decisions. Colleges are starting to post important information on the portals and may be requesting additional documents from students. Students need to fully read the admissions decision letters and follow their prompts so that they do not miss out on an opportunity! All decisions for Early Action, Early Decision, and Regular must be released to the student from the college by April 1, 2019. May 1, 2019 is College Decision Day, when students must notify the college they will be attending. To secure their spot, students will need to submit an admissions deposit along with any room & board deposits and orientation fees. Each college admission offer will outline what they require to secure a spot. Please contact your child’s counselor if you have any questions.
Parents are invited to hear about key timelines, procedures, and resources to help support their students in the college process. A panel of college representatives will share their insights on managing the college search process, how colleges make decisions, and paying for college. The next SAT registration date is April 5 for the May 4 SAT test. The next ACT registration date is May 3 for the June 8 ACT test. As SOL season is approaching, we want to remind families that electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) are prohibited inside the SOL testing environment. Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern. In past instances, a student’s access to a personal device in the testing environment has been identified as attempted cheating, please don’t let this happen to you! Let’s work together to create a positive and safe testing environment for everyone.
The Spring 2019 Non-Writing SOLs are just around the corner (May 6-June 7) and your child will have an opportunity to opt-in to SOLs that are needed for an Advanced Studies Diploma. If your child is interested in taking one or more additional SOLs during this testing window, please contact their counselor by April 15. This is only necessary for students not sitting in that class. Please contact your child's counselor if you have any questions.
This year, the main Standards of Learning (SOL) testing window has significant overlaps with Ramadan, the Muslim holy month marked by daily fasting. The SOL testing window begins for high schools on Monday, April 29, and for elementary and middle schools on Monday, May 6. All schools must complete SOL make-up tests and retakes by Friday, June 7. Ramadan begins the evening of Sunday, May 5, and ends with Eid-al-Fitr on Wednesday, June 5.
FCPS welcomes and encourages engagement with parents and guardians of students affected by this overlap. Justice staff will work with parents and guardians to make schedule adjustments or determine how best to address students’ needs.
If you have a child in an SOL grade-level who will be fasting to observe Ramadan this year, notify his/her school counselor to take advantage of possible scheduling options.

FCPS will hold its 14th Annual Special Education Conference from 7:45 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at Lake Braddock Secondary School (LBSS). Beautify your lawn while helping Justice HS!
This annual fundraiser benefits a few different groups: (1) Justice seniors, because the All-Night Graduation Party receives its funding from the proceeds of the sale; (2) Students from all grades, because it gives them volunteer hours and the opportunity to earn dollars for their Justice team/club and; (3) Parents, neighbors, and other community members because they have the opportunity to beautify their lawns with mulch delivered by hard-working Justice students.

Bags are $5.50 per 3-cubic foot bag for brown mulch and per 2-cubic foot bag for red mulch. Delivery is free if ordering more than 30 bags and $25 if ordering less than 30 bags.

Are you planning to go to the all-night grad party, then we need you!
Saturday, April 6th is mulch delivery day.
Each year the PTSA sells mulch to fund the all-night graduation party. Come out and volunteer and help earn money toward YOUR all-night grad party, and while you are working with the mulch delivery you can also earn money for your favorite Justice sports team or club.
Students volunteer positions include:
· Working in the lot
· Delivering mulch with a mulch delivery team
Senior parents we need you too!
Parents/Adults volunteer positions include:
· Chase car drivers, a fuel stipend may be given to the drivers (must be 21 or older to drive a chase car)
· Delivery truck drivers (must be 25 or older to drive a delivery truck)
· Working in the lot
