Ten McLean students brought home awards from their DECA State Conference. These students take a test and have one or more role play scenarios in their events. They were awarded top 10 medals for one or both.

Science Fair
The Fairfax County Regional Science & Engineering Fair was held the weekend of March 15 - March 17 at Robinson Secondary School. Participants from McLean are pictured below. The following Highlanders won either Corporate and Professional Organization Awards or Category Awards.

NOVA Region PTA Essay Contest Winner
Layla Zaidi was a first place award-winner in the 2019 NOVA Regional PTA's Citizenship Essay Contest. The essay topic was, "What Do I Stand For?"

McLean Science Olympiad Team
The McLean Science Olympiad team took 7th place overall at States. They medaled in:
- Dynamic Planet and Fossils, an Earth Science Competition in which the team tested various characteristics of the Ocean and fossil remains
- Herpetology, a Biology competition where students identified and evaluated characteristics of amphibians and reptiles
- Sound of Music, a physics/music theory competition where the team built a stringed musical instrument, played a song and took an exam on music theory

Congratulations to our Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band students for earning Superior Ratings from all four adjudicators at the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association State Assessment!

All-State Orchestra
Students auditioned amongst hundreds of highly skilled student musicians from all over Virginia at James Madison University in February and were accepted to perform in a special concert during the first weekend of April with students from around the state at the Dominion Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Richmond, Virginia. Musical selections will include “The Neighbor’s Dance” from The Three-Cornered Hat by Manuel de Falla, Rhapsody for Orchestra by Yuso Toyama, Suite Versailles by Brian Balmages, and select movements of a Sibelius Symphony.
