Congratulations!

A team representing Lees Corner Elementary achieved Highest Honors in the recent WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. The third grade team scored an impressive 173 points out of a possible 200 in the second of three meets this year, placing tenth in the nation!

The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.  Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically.  Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge™ materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight.  They are particularly well suited for children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

Double the Fun!

Lees Corner’s Family Fun Night is scheduled for Thursday, April 4th. Join us at the Franklin Farm Baskin Robbins for Scoop Night from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Come see your Lees Corner teachers scooping ice cream.

Then, head over to Launch Trampoline Park, also at Franklin Farm, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to release some energy and have fun with friends.

A percentage of the sales from both businesses that evening will be donated to the Lees Corner PTA.

Go Blue in April

Across our country and throughout the world, April is recognized as Autism Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month. It has become a tradition in our school to be a part of the nationwide community that spreads awareness for these two causes.

Sadly, approximately 5 children die each day in the United States as a result of child abuse, and there are 2.9 million cases of child abuse reported each year in the United States. Children with disabilities may be at higher risk for abuse than children without disabilities. Additionally, 1 in 59 children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.

Below is a list of events planned for our school:

Coin-a-Day Challenge (all month) – A collection container will be given to each class and collected for counting at the end of the each week. We will be promoting the collection of a different coin for each day of the week: Penny Monday, Nickel Tuesday, Dime Wednesday, Quarter Thursday, and Any Coin Friday. The class that collects the most money will earn an extra PBIS cart visit with surprise items not available at Blizzard’s Market.

4/1 (Monday)- Pinwheels for Prevention and Awareness Trees

Take a walk outside to see our Pinwheel Garden and Awareness Trees in the entry way.

4/2 (Tuesday) – Light It Up Blue

Students and Staff are encouraged to wear BLUE to show awareness for Autism and Child Abuse.

4/9 (Tuesday)- 8th Annual PJs for Charity

Students and staff may wear PJs to school and bring a suggested donation of $1. Money raised for the Coin-a-Day Challenge and PJs for Charity will be donated to both Marley’s Mission and Mason Life.

The Mason LIFE Program is an innovative post-secondary program for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who desire a university experience in a supportive academic environment.

Marley's Mission provides free equine based therapy to children who have been abused or traumatized.

Curriculum Night: Open Mic Night

We are very excited to host our second Open Mic Night as part of LCES Curriculum Night on Thursday, April 11th! Open Mic Night will take place in the Upper Theatre (Ms. Kmetz's room). Students are invited to share a short story or poem in front of a live audience filled with teachers, parents, and friends!

While we strongly encourage children to select a piece of their own writing, reading another author's writing is also permitted. Please note, your child's selection must fall within the 5 minute time frame. We hope you can join us in celebrating our talented student authors! You can use the link below to sign up:

Did your family participate in One School, One Book? Did you enjoy reading about Alice's adventure to save Aunt Polly's secret pie recipe? Please have your child join us for our culminating One School, One Book event at LCES Curriculum Night on Thursday, April 11th. Students in grades 1-6 are invited to participate in a Pie-themed Breakout EDU, where they'll work interactively with peers to solve the mystery of Polly Portman's secret pie recipe!

The Breakout EDU will take place in two separate sessions: Grades 1-3 (6:00-6:40) and Grades 4-6 (6:50-7:30). Both sessions will be held in the Lower Theatre. Please promptly pick up your child at the scheduled time.

Please note: Due to limited space, students must be signed up to participate in this event. If you can no longer attend, we kindly ask that you cancel your sign up to provide space for another student. You can use the link below to sign up:
