Dear CES,

We had a wonderful week filled with field trips, trout releases, musicals, book fair, assemblies, and of course lots of learning.

Please join us tomorrow for the Whole School Clean-up and Family Book Fair events. The clean-up is a very important event at CES, due to our focus around education for sustainability and outdoor learning. Our students love learning from and with the environment around the school. I am always incredibly impressed with how our teachers utilize the campus and outdoor classrooms to engage the students in the content areas. Tomorrow, we are tasked with beautifying our entire campus. To do this we will need a large group of volunteers. Any support you could provide would be very much appreciated.

PTA Engagement Survey:

It's hard to believe the end of the year is quickly approaching. The current PTA board is looking towards next school year and we want your input. Please take some time and complete our engagement survey. The results will be shared with the new board, which will be elected in May and used as we plan for the 2019-2020 school year. You may remain anonymous or share your contact information if you'd like to expand on your comments. You do not have to be a current PTA member to submit a survey. You can access the survey by clicking this link, https://forms.gle/uVjaRTBdGHrpbBYV7

The grade level with the highest percent of participation will earn a grade level spirit day chosen by the teachers. The teachers of that grade level will be gifted with lunch.

Spring Book Fair:

Calling all parents and family members. I am so excited for our upcoming Spring "Dino-mite" Book Fair! We'd love for you to come and help out at the Book Fair in any way possible. Please sign up for the time(s) that work best for you. When you arrive at the school please sign in at the office and proceed to the library. If you have any questions, please contact Aubrey Thorne, CES Librarian, at adthorne@fcps.edu. Volunteers will receive a $5 voucher for use at the book fair. Sign up to volunteer here, https://volunteersignup.org/BDH44

This past week our students focused on:

FAIRNESS

Fairness means that you believe that all people have value. You approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect. Fairness is complex. That's because it is the product of moral judgment – the process by which people determine what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Moral reasoning has been explored and analyzed in two main traditions: the justice reasoning approach and the care reasoning approach.

Justice reasoning emphasizes the use of reason and logic. In justice reasoning, fairness is determined by objectively weighing what is right or wrong, as determined by a group, society, or universal ethical principles. Care reasoning, by contrast, emphasizes care and compassion. This approach uses concepts like empathy – and understanding and accounting for the needs, interests, and well-being of another person – when making moral decisions.

Although the two approaches are different, most people use a blend of justice and care reasoning when making choices related to fairness.

Positivity Project Reflections

Here are some conversation starters that will encourage your child to share what they’ve learned and talk about it with your family.

1. What does fairness mean to you?
2. How can you treat other people with fairness?
3. How have others treated you with fairness?
4. How does fairness spread to other people?
5. Does fair always mean “the same”?
