March 29, 2019 Family Newsletter

March 29, 2019 - Family Newsletter

It is hard to believe next week is the end of the 3rd quarter. This year is flying by. Remember there is no school for students on Friday, April 5, because of a Teacher Work Day at the end of the quarter. We will have one week of school before Spring Break which runs from April 15 - 19. When we return on April 22, be prepared for the remainder of the year to go by quickly. End-of-year Standards of Learning assessments begin on Tuesday, May 7, and the specific dates and tests for each grade level are listed at the end of this newsletter.

Today was an exciting day for Union Mill and for 5th grade teacher Ashley Abrams. Our Acting Assistant Superintendent Jay Pearson came and announced Ms. Abrams as the Region 4 New Teacher of the Year. Ms. Abrams will be recognized at the FCPS Honors Ceremony later this year along with the winners from the other four regions. I know you join me in congratulating Ashley for this honor and appreciate her team and all of our amazing staff members for the work they do each and every day for your children. I know I feel very lucky each and every day to work with such an amazing staff. Click on the picture to see more.

Thank you to the Watch D.O.G.S. that came in to volunteer this week. Thanks go out to Mr. Hutcherson, Mr. Goff, Mr. Isaza, Mr. Morrell, Mr. Kaiser, Mr. Sim, Mr. Garcia, Mr. Laufer, Mr. Gallivan, and Mr. Hellegas.  Our Watch D.O.G. program ends on April 12, and if you have participated in our Watch D.O.G.S. program this year, please mark Monday, June 10, for our end-of-year Watch D.O.G.S. picnic. More details to follow later this year.

The focus for The Positivity Project this week was the character strength of Fairness and to be honest, this time of year, it is an important trait to talk about. With the weather getting nicer and everyone waiting for Spring Break, our students are sometimes forgetting that #OtherPeopleMatter. According to Jeff Bryan of The Positivity Project, Fairness means that you believe that all people have value. You approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect. Fairness is correlated with highly desirable outcomes. Fairness helps people to become trustworthy friends, responsible citizens, and generally moral people. Fairness is also essential for the good of the group. As individuals develop their capacity for thinking about Fairness they often grow in self-reflection, self-awareness and self-confidence, and perspective taking (i.e. the ability to “put themselves in another’s shoes”). These skills significantly enhance a person’s ability to solve interpersonal and group relationship problems which is a life-long skill. Next week, we will focus on the character strength of Humor.

Some of our budding artists had their work displayed at the Centreville Pyramid Art Show yesterday at Centreville High School. Thanks go out to our art teachers Anne Hollis and Jennifer Martinelli for their time preparing our students work for the show as well as being at the show. Congratulations to the following students: K - Mark and Ellie; 1st - Parsa and Emma; 2nd - William and Bisaj; 3rd - Natalie and Bella; 4th - Oliver and Pia; 5th - Kate, Jamie, and Leonela; 6th - Gwyn and Dania. Please click on the picture below to see more.

Thank you to everyone that contributed to our SCA pet supply drive to benefit the local animal shelter. I am sure all donations will be appreciated and used. #OtherPeopleMatter (and animals, too!)

2019-20 Kindergarten Registration Underway - Please register to ensure we are staffed appropriately for next year!

We are currently registering new students for kindergarten for the 2019-20 school year. If your child will reach his or her fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2019, he or she is eligible to attend kindergarten in the Fairfax County Public School that serves your address. Please share this information with anyone you know that will have a child that will be in kindergarten next year. Here are the steps for registration:

  1. Complete a packet of registration forms—you may obtain these in the Union Mill Elementary office or online at https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/enroll_0.pdf. Feel free to call Union Mill’s registrar at 703‑322‑8500 if you need help navigating the website.
  2. Gather supporting documents—proof of residence in the Union Mill boundary, a certified copy of your child’s birth certificate, parent/guardian photo ID, and any custody orders. Certificate of physical exam and immunization will be required before your child may start school, but is not required for registration.
  3. Call the registrar at 703-322-8500 or email lrmilla@fcps.edu to make an appointment to bring your completed registration forms and supporting documentation to school.
  4. Plan to attend Kindergarten Orientation with your child on Monday, April 1, from 4:00 to 5:00. Rising kindergarten students will have the opportunity to visit a kindergarten classroom while parents attend an information session in the school cafeteria.

If you plan to delay your child’s enrollment in kindergarten by one year, you are required to notify the school in writing of your intent.

Upcoming Autism Awareness Event - Volunteers Needed

The PE department is excited to host The Autism Awareness Stations again this year! The event will take place on Wednesday, April 3, and Thursday, April 4, during PE classes. Students will experience how people with differing abilities think, learn, and play. We could not run these great stations without help. The Lorigo family has been an amazing leader and supporter of this program for many years. If you are able to join us to supervise a station, please contact Heather Lorigo at heatherlorigo@hotmail.com or Ben Lorigo at  belorigo@gmail.com. Thank you for your support!!
