Principal's Note

Parents.

Mrs. Lancaster will be joining Sleepy Hollow as interim Assistant Principal until the end of the school year while Mrs. Covey is on maternity leave. Mrs. Lancaster grew up in Georgia and graduated from Wesleyan College. She earned advanced degrees from Indiana University and the University of Virginia.  After teaching in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, she came to Virginia with her husband and served Fairfax County Public Schools for 25 years before retiring as principal from Fairview Elementary.   She most recently served as interim AP at nearby Belvedere Elementary for the first half of this school year.

She delights in the atmosphere of the school environment, particularly hearing the fresh ideas and projects of students, teachers and the community. She enjoys music, history, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

We are excited to have Ms. Lancaster join us for the remainder of the school year.

Thank you,
Eric T. Johnson
Principal

Heroes Around Us

chloe_collage

Over the weekend one of our students was recognized by the PTA for her visual interpretation of the Reflections theme “Heroes Around Us”. There were different artistic categories students could enter under. Chloe entered the contest in the Visual Arts category and she drew, colored and painted a picture of a teacher with a class. She won at the local level. Her entry was then passed to compete against other northern va counties, such as Arlington and Alexandria. She won 2nd place there.

Cesar_Chavez

Celebrate Cesar Chavez Day

March 31st is Cesar Chavez Day. Cesar Chavez stood for fairness, equality, and justice. He was a Mexican-American farmworker who became a world-renowned civil rights leader known for his efforts to gain better wages and working conditions for migrant farmers.

  • Cesar Chavez once said, “Preservation of one’s own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures.” Use this statement as a journal or discussion prompt with your child. Ask them what it means for them to preserve their own culture.
  • If they are younger, explain what “culture” means and discuss some ways that your family celebrates your culture.

Have your child write about or draw a picture of what they enjoy doing to preserve their culture.

Pennies for Patients

Next Monday, April 1st officially kicks off our Pennies for Patients (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) campaign. Last year we raised $3000 and we have made that our goal again for this year. The campaign will run until Friday, April 12th (the last day before Spring Break).

On Monday, April 1st we will have our kickoff campaign with a representative from the Pennies for Patients office.  Teachers will receive student collection boxes and a letter explaining Pennies for Patients. Students will take them home and be encouraged to start bringing change/dollar bills in the very next day.

As in previous years, we will have a big thermometer in the front hall so we can graph how much change we have collected.

In addition, we are doing the online component this year. This means that you can create a fundraiser link through Facebook so that your family and friends who don’t live nearby can contribute to our campaign.

How to get involved online: visit: https://events.lls.org/pages/nca/Sleepy-Hollow-Elementary-School-Falls-Church-2019 and click “Join Your School Team” on the right. Fill out your child’s information to receive their unique fundraising URL. Share this URL via email and social media.

Below are some videos/links that you can watch to build your understanding around what we are truly raising money for.

Student Placements for 2019-2020 School Year

While it is still early to be thinking ahead to next year, we want to give you information about class placements for the 2019-20 school-year ahead of time. The staff at Sleepy Hollow work hard to place students in an optimal learning situation each year. If you have some information that would help us make those decisions, please send your comments in writing to Mr. Johnson by May31st. Please do not list teacher names. Rather, describe the learning environment in which your child learns best.
