Beginning in June 2020 the School of Practical Nursing in Fairfax County Public Schools supported by Falls Church Academy will begin a 15-month uninterrupted cohort of Practical Nursing with licensure. Enrolled students will begin this program during the summer months before and after their senior year, in addition to attending classes their senior academic year. Classes will be held at the Plum Center for Lifelong Learning. Students successfully completing the cohort are eligible to sit for the Virginia Practical Nursing Licensing Exam (NCLEX-LPN) provided they have a Social Security Number or a control number issued by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles as required by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
Beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year, Vietnamese 1, 2 and 3 are being offered at the Academy. This is the only Vietnamese course offered in FCPS and is a great opportunity for those interested in learning this language.
Each year students in FCPS receive vision and hearing screening through all Student Health Centers. Considering the number of students that receive this assessment, staff are challenged to complete this task without the help of volunteers. Students from the Medical Assistant class in the Academy provided support to Falls Church and Madison High School students by taking vital signs, offering vision screening and assessing students hearing using an audiometer. This experience provides hands-on learning to Medical Assistant students who will be tested on these assessments when they sit for their Certified Clinical Medical Assistant test at the end of the school year.
Firefighters from Fire Station 418 B-Shift in Falls Church visited Falls Church Academy’s Emergency Medical Technician classes on October 24, 2019. During their visit they prepared students for ride-along experiences to begin in mid-November by showing them airway equipment, offering a tour of their ambulance, sharing stories of their career and giving suggestions to create the best ride-along experiences. For real life excitement added to the visit, FS 418 was called into service twice during their presentations and students saw how they prepare for their calls in real time.
Forty-seven Academy students holding leadership positions in HOSA headed to the Fall Leadership Conference at Lord Fairfax Community College in Middletown, VA on Friday, October 25, 2020. The purpose of the conference was to induct the new officers and assist student leaders in developing their skills and knowledge of leadership as they go forward in their positions with HOSA. Vanessa Ma, Region IV Vice President, currently a student at Falls Church Academy in the Pharmacy Technician class assisted in coordinating the day’s events.
In May, 2019 the Fairfax County Public Schools Emergency Medical Technician and Firefighting 1 & 2 were selected as the Region 4 winners of the 2019 Creating Excellence Secondary Advisory Committee Award. The creating excellence awards are presented annually to recognize exemplary programs and partnerships that promote excellence in career and technical education. Congratulations to these classes for their great work with preparing students for emergency management careers.
