Putting a Bit of Spring in Our Step!
It is a pleasure to inform our Flint Hill families that we have been selected to receive a 2019 Fiskars Project Orange Thumb grant! Check out our name alongside all the other recipients currently featured on Fiskars.com.
Fiskars received many strong applications this year, but they were particularly impressed with the way Karen Fischer, our outdoor learning and science specialist, presented our thoughtful garden plan and desire for community involvement.
As a grant recipient, we will receive a Fiskars toolkit, which includes rakes, shovels, and loppers for a total value of $1,500. We will also receive a $1,000 gift card to be used on goods for our garden, such as plant, soil, mulch, or wood.
Did We Get Your Attention?
It's Our Second Annual Garden Grub!
Earth Week is just around the corner, and Flint Hill is already planning on ways to celebrate! To foster community engagement in our green efforts, Flint Hill is hosting a “Garden Grub” event--pun intended--by which we mean to garden and eat delicious breakfast treats, tending our beautiful grounds. This event will be held on Saturday, April 27th, from 8:00-11:00 am. Click here to RSVP. Don't forget to share some love with our chickens while you are here!
National Wildlife Federation Eco-Schools USA:
Going For Our Fourth Green Flag!
The Eco-Schools USA program provides a framework to help educators integrate sustainable principles throughout their schools and curriculum. School-based action teams, comprised of students, educators, administrators, and community volunteers promote environmental stewardship by connecting children with nature. Flint Hill Elementary School has already received three green flags, a monumental achievement, for its work in supporting environmentally sound practices, as well as forwarding all aspects of environmental education! To this end, Flint Hill is striving to be become a Green Flag school for the fourth time and become a permanent green school!
We have obtained 200 out of 300 points toward this goal, and to further our efforts, our school community needs to analyze its healthy living practices. Please take a moment to complete the Google Form to help our school achieve our fourth and final Green Flag. Click here for survey. Thank you, in advance, for your support of these efforts!
Thank you, 6th Grade Parents, Students, and Staff!
It was an amazing evening, and we can't wait until next year!
All who attended and participated had a fantastic time, and we look forward to continuing to celebrate our students, school spirit, and promote community and family engagement in fun and meaningful ways. What an incredibly successful first year of this awesome, new tradition!

On a more serious note, we feel it is important to share with our community that a non-operable, antique toy cap gun gun was found on our campus yesterday. It was most certainly a toy, but it could have appeared to others as something more realistic--especially from far away.
Fairfax County Public Schools has rules and regulations that all students must follow, at all times, on Fairfax County grounds. This includes how students are expected to comport themselves during school-sponsored activities. At Flint Hill, student safety is our number one priority, and we want you to know that this will always be the case.
Please know that toy guns, and any look-alike weapon, can lead lead to serious consequences that must be considered when students make a choice to bring a fake weapon to school--or have a fake-weapon on school grounds. Please consider reviewing the Student Rights and Responsibilities manual with your child.
Lastly, all students participated in a Students Rights and Responsibilities mid-year review lesson given by their classroom teacher. As we continue to work with our students on making good choices, please use this Student Discipline for Parents guide to help you and your family better understand how disciplinary decisions are made.

We care about our students, families, and staff, and we are grateful for the opportunity to continue to communicate with you how we can work together to ensure all students' academic, social, and emotional well-being at Flint Hill. Next year, we will focus on Executive Function (EF) and self-regulation at Flint Hill as we continue our journey with Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). Please visit this resource for more information on these topics, especially how EF and self-regulation relate to making good choices.

We Welcome Early Registration!
Kindergarten registration is upon us! We welcome parents of rising kindergarten students to register their child at their earliest convenience. This helps us get acquainted with our new students and allows us to have our numbers so we can best staff our kindergarten classrooms. Please don't hesitate to share this information with a neighbor, friend, or colleague who lives within our boundaries. We want to ensure we get students registered as early as possible--in addition to registering for our Bridge to Kindergarten program this summer!
For more information on kindergarten registration, please contact our Student Information Assistant, Shirley Eason.
To register your child for Bridge to Kindergarten, a program that supports a three week jump start at Flint Hill, please see this link for details.

Fourth graders experienced life in colonial times this week with a day filled with engaging activities! Here are some of the learning experiences they participated in within their classrooms. As an aside, it looks like we have a budding actor here at Flint Hill. Mr. Smoot looks like he really does have a toothache!
Thank you to the teachers, parents, and extended family members who made this day of learning happen for our students!
