LBSS: Weekly News, March 29, 2019

Craig

Good afternoon Lake Braddock Community,

It is hard to believe that my time at Lake Braddock is winding down and I just have two more weeks to be part of this school community.  I will continue to share with my colleagues throughout the district that that I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to lead this school, even for a short time, and to meet so many dedicated staff members and incredible students.  Here are my highlights for this week:

  • Today, we got to surprise Craig Whitesell with the Region 4 Outstanding New Secondary Teacher of the Year.  Mr. Whitesell is such a great example of the work our teachers do every single day to make a difference in the lives of students.  He is commended for his dedication and the innovative way he approaches making learning relevant for all of this students.
  • Ending my Friday by watching the final performance of iCanDance--a program partnering our special education students with buddies to learn to dance.  What a great event!  Thanks to our student volunteers who helped make the experience possible and to Ms. Bryan for bringing it to LBSS.
  • Other fun events this week:  Fully Committed, our Black Box Theatre performance; International Night; & our Middle School Team Day Challenge.

I'm looking forward to my mulch delivery tomorrow!  Hope you have a great weekend.

Penny Gros

Interim Principal

SOL & AP Season - Personal Electronic Devices are Prohibited

As SOL and AP season is approaching, we want to remind families that electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) are prohibited inside the testing environment.  Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern.  In past instances, a student’s access to a personal device in the testing environment has been identified as attempted cheating and must be reported to the state as a testing irregularity.  Please take the time to remind your child about the importance of maintaining a secure testing environment.

Congrats to our Army JROTC Academic Bowl Team

Lake Braddock Secondary is the only Army JROTC in the state of Virginia to advance to the 2019 Army JROTC Academic Bowl Championship. Team members Isobel Ferrin (captain), Charles Wheaton (team coordinator), Juseong Kim, Jaylah Straughter, Christian Techam, and Annette Emerson represent Lake Braddock.  The competition began with 1,411 teams competing in Level I and will conclude in June with the Junior Leadership Academic Bowl Championship in Washington, D.C. The winner of the Army Academic Championship will face the winners from the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps in the Joint Service Academic Championship.  They will meet in Washington, D.C. from 21-25 June 2019.

Congrats to Elizabeth Tucker, JROTC Cadet

Cadet Elizabeth Tucker has won the National Essay Contest for Cadet Command competing against 1411 other Army JROTC Schools. She is the only Cadet out of seven (7) states to win in 4th BDE. To put this into another larger perspective, 4th BDE Cadet Command’s states include South Carolina, North Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington D.C.. That is to give you a scope of the Command Authority just for one brigade alone.  She will now also attend the JLAB Finals for special recognition!

HS Information

AP Pre-Administration

Lake Braddock will be conducting the AP pre-administration sessions by grade level.  We will have three sessions, which will begin promptly at 8:00 AM for all students taking an AP Exam.  Students should report directly to the cafeteria.  Attendance to your session is MANDATORY.  Completing this information ahead of time will save approximately 30-45 minutes per exam.  Additionally, this will allow students who have two exams on the same day to have a break between exams.  It is also our goal that afternoon exams end at a reasonable time, so students can meet other academic and extra-curricular obligations.

The AP pre-administration dates and times are as follows:

Monday, April 8th – Seniors (8:00 AM - Cafeteria) Wednesday, April 10th – Juniors (8:00 AM - Cafeteria)  Friday, April 12th – Sophomores & Freshmen (8:00 AM - Cafeteria)

We need 100% participation from each student taking an AP Exam.  Your attendance is mandatory if you are taking an AP Exam!  In order for you to take an AP Exam, pre-administration has to take place BEFORE the test date.  Please make sure that you do NOT have any appointments scheduled outside of the building the morning of your pre-administration.  You should put your pre-administration date on your calendar.  PLEASE make sure you bring a #2 pencil with you to the pre-administration to fill out your answer sheet.  Do NOT bring a mechanical pencil.  College Board's scanners do NOT recognize mechanical pencils.

When you attend your pre-administration, you will be given an envelope with four items.  You will remove these items from your envelope and take them home with you after pre-administration is complete:

  1. 2018-2019 Bulletin for AP Students and Parents
  2. 2019 AP Exam Schedule (location and time is included for both weeks)
  3. AP Exam Day Policies and Exam Security (you are responsible for knowing all this information)
  4. AP Testing Attendance Form (one form for all sessions; NO phone calls/parent notes will be taken)
  5. Student Accommodation and/or Late Testing letters

There is a lot of important information listed above.  Please read ALL of it very carefully.   If you have any questions and/or concerns, please feel free to contact the AP Testing Team.  Their contact information is below.

Ms. Brown:  dsbrown1@fcps.edu or 703.426.1047

Ms. Carrera:  lncarrera@fcps.edu or 703.426.1054
