 Pennies for Patients FUNdraiser
For two weeks (March 25-April 4), Cooper Middle School is participating in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Pennies for Patients program; a service-learning program that gives students the unique experience of working together to help raise awareness and funds in honor of thousands of children and adults fighting against blood cancers. We are asking that everyone in our community join this effort of raising awareness and collecting funds to benefit the mission of LLS: to find cures for blood cancers and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

Cooper Spelling Bee Champion!
Congratulations to Caroline Xu! Our 2019 Cooper Spelling Bee Champion tied for 2nd Runner-Up in the Fairfax County Spelling Bee on March 17. The 13th Annual Fairfax County Spelling Bee took place at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke. 73 school champions took the stage for the 15-word written test, which was followed by an oral round for all spellers. After a break to consider the results of the written test, Caroline was named one of 19 finalists by the judges. The Bee continued for 16 more oral rounds. The winning word, fittingly enough with spring around the corner, was JONQUIL. Caroline is our first Cooper MS champion to place in the Regional Spelling Bee!

The Summer English Boot Camp is geared towards rising 8th-grade students who want to be more confident in their writing before the school year starts. Students will work on composing a full multi-paragraph analysis using CECc paragraphs. Students will have voice and choice in their readings, but will hone their annotation and analytical responses to the reading that they select each day. All lessons will help students grow on their critical and creative thinking skills, and all students will receive feedback from current Cooper teachers and peers throughout the week. This boot camp is a good opportunity for students to meet other students, review skills, and engage in thinking over the summer.

Reducing Anxiety: Strategies to Interrupt the Worry Cycle, featuring Lynn Lyons, LICSW
Monday, April 1, 2019, at 7 p.m. McLean Community Center Alden Theater
Childhood should be a joyful time of carefree play, active learning and spontaneous exploration, yet a growing number of children are trapped in a cycle of anxiety that literally paralyzes them with fear and affects whole family. The good news is that anxiety disorders are highly treatable, and current research shows that children, teens and adults can be trained to successfully manage anxiety given the proper tools.
As part of a yearlong focus on youth anxiety, the Safe Community Coalition is pleased to present an evening with nationally-recognized speaker Lynn Lyons, LICW and author of Anxious Kids Anxious Parents: 7 Ways to Stop the Worry Cycle and Raise Courageous and Independent Children. Lynn will provide practical and straightforward strategies that parents and educators can use to break the cycle of anxious worrying.
Tickets are available at https://reducinganxiety.brownpapertickets.com/.
A limited number of books, as well as a companion book, Playing with Anxiety: Casey’s Guide for Teens and Kids will be for sale. A book signing will follow the presentation.
In addition, both McLean High School and Langley High School are hosting book discussions prior to the evening event. The Langley discussion will be led by Principal Greer on Monday, March 18 at noon and the McLean High School talk will be led by Dr. Melissa Sporn on Tuesday, March 26 at 10 a.m.
Please visit the Safe Community Coalition website (mcleanscc.org) for more information on the evening event or book talks.
