Falls Church Academy teachers and HOSA students aided 33 teachers and FCPS staff in gaining their first or renewed American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR/AED Certification at an event designed as a fundraiser to help HOSA students attend the VA State HOSA Competition. Teachers working toward their certification were pleased by the organization of the event and felt they learned so much from the experience that they were ready for any emergency based on what they learned through the course. A sum of $990.00 was earned from this event which will be put to use assisting students attending the VA State HOSA Competition and the International HOSA Competition.
On Friday, February 15, students from the Emergency Medical Technician course visited the Fairfax County Fire Training Academy. On this visit students were taught airway intubation, ALS defibrillation, CPR techniques, the use of the Lucas 2 by Fairfax County Firefighters and paramedics. In addition, the students received a great tour of the Fire Training Academy. A bonus to the trip was that the students got to see a live training burn and the Fairfax County Police helicopter unit took off overhead.
Detective Lora Aggour with Fairfax County Police Department Polygraph Section came to speak to all Criminal Justice students at Falls Church Academy. Students learned why someone would receive a polygraph and the process it takes to complete this investigation. Some students were connected to the polygraph machine to learn the process first hand. They learned that their breathing, perspiration, heart beat and movement all effect the outcome of the polygraph and that it is not possible to trick the machine into giving false reads
The Pharmacy Technician Level 2 students visited VCU School of Pharmacy, Fairfax Campus on March 6. In addition, they had the opportunity to see the various operations of Inova Fairfax Health System Pharmacy. During the visit current VCU Pharmacy students were in attendance to talk about how to apply to pharmacy school, what to expect of pharmacy school and what their plans are for after graduation. Many Falls Church Academy Pharmacy students have already been accepted to colleges, some to VCU, and were excited to hear about what lies ahead for them. On the tour of the Inova Pharmacy operations students saw the sterile IV and medication area, the automated MedCarousel, emergency room pharmacy and learned about the tube system that transports medications through the hospital.
Students from Patient Care Technician, Medical Assistant and Emergency Medical Technician courses at Falls Church Academy had the exciting opportunity to experience the Cadaver Lab at Northern Virginia Community College’s Medical Campus on Friday, March 8. When in the Lab, Dr. Farah Ateeq walked the students through the various parts of the body and gave the students the chance to hold the lungs, liver, heart and see the thickness of the skin. Dr. Ateeq provided fictious scenarios for students to think through and use their medical knowledge to diagnose potential diseases or injuries. When that experience was complete, students went to the simulation lab to explore the phlebotomy lab, a synthetic cadaver and even assisted a crying simulation mannequin infant.
